Most older monitors come either with a VGA, (which needs an adapter box), or with a larger white DVI-D connector, which can be used with a HDMI to DVI-D cable.

If you are thinking to use the laptops LCD as a screen, then forget it.... it won't work, (unless you are some kind of hacker with a budget, and the technical know how, to buy and use a special interface board to convert a "raw" LCD panel to a HDMI capable monitor) buying a new monitor is much cheaper and easier.
