Still using Minecraft?

Sun Oct 13, 2019 3:52 pm

I still see a lot of articles and examples about python scripts for Minecraft Pi.

Why do I say "still"?
Minecraft Pi is a dead project, never to be updated again.
Only runs on the Pi.
Its integration in the destkop is less that optimal with odd mouse behaviour.
There are pretty good FOSS alternatives out there.

So, why is nobody pushing for something like Minetest?

I have a possible answer: the "python api".
Nothing else seems to have a simple (and yet powerful) api to modify the world.

Any other reason?

The name/brand power of Minecraft is still very strong (over a 100 million monthly players according to https://www.engadget.com/2019/09/15/min ... y-players/), so using it in coding examples/tutorials will probably still draw in people that enjoy Minecraft on other platforms and want to feel comfortable with an environment/brand (Minecraft) whilst experimenting with something possibly new (Python) to them.

This is definitely true and Minecraft resonates a lot more than Minetest or some other "piworld".

In the same way that people on a pi are encouraged to use LibreOffice (hoe many users does MSOffice have?) some effort towards fully open 3d worlds would be welcome.

Having said that, I struggled to find a viable alternative, so feature-wise MC still wins.
