Casting RetroPie to laptop display

Wed Jul 24, 2019 3:40 pm

Does anybody know how I can view my retropie screen, like the menu, games, etc., through VNC? I connected to my pi but i was only able to bring up the terminal but no GUI. I installed VNC using ssh terminal in putty, set the server to :0, and :1, set a password, and cant get anything. Is this possible, to pretty much view the PI's output, on my laptop screen? Please give me any info possible, thanks.

I view my Pi4 on a desktop PC screen via wifi, so unless Retropie disallows it I would think you could use a laptop too.

Are you using Raspian Buster (the latest version)?
Have you enabled ssh and vnc in raspi-config, and also created a blank file called ssh (no filename extension) in the boot folder?
Have you installed VNC Viewer on the laptop?
I also had to change my screen resolution to get it working properly (1920 x 1080 60hz, option 16 in my case for the UK - also via 'sudo raspi-config').

RetroPie requires all games to render without a window manager, so I don't think that would work out of the box.

It's probably possible to build RetroArch with X11 support. v4l2loopback kernel module uv4l-raspidisp might also work in theory. Apparently the PlayZone PZ-HDMI can take the video and loop it back into the Pi for casting. Some of these options are rather complex or costly.

For the best experience you could also use an HDMI to USB capture stick and connect that to the PC, but if you've got a long cable running to the PC that's not casting. Or for the best experience you would run RetroArch on the PC itself :)

Hopefully others have some better ideas.

Edit: Realized the RealVNC's framebuffer capture would indeed work here. Note it's not enabled by default on Buster. Go to the VNC Server tray icon -> Options -> Troubleshooting -> Enable direct capture mode.

Edit 2: UV4L comes with an RTSP server, so uv4l-raspidisp + uv4l-server may give you everything you need.

With UV4L you can even play RetroPie games (with audio), not only cast video, on any browser (no plugin is required at all) (PC/Android) + gamepad/keyboard. Again, games run in retropie on the rpi, while video and audio are streamed in realtime to the pc/laptop. The gamepad/keyboard can either be attached to the pc/laptop or to the rpi itself.
