Pi4, Handheld and PS2

Sun Jun 30, 2019 3:42 pm

Hi,

I'm new to the Pi world and have never build anything in my life. I'm interested in having a Pi 4 as handheld gaming machine.

For that I need some help:
Is it possible to emulate PS2? It's not mandatory, but would be nice.
Is it possible to buy a pre handheld kit with two R&L trigger if ps2 is a possibility. (Only found with one R&L)

And in the case that I have to build it from scratch, how possible it is with zero skills raleted to that?

Thanks all in advance for helping me :)

PS2 emulation on the Pi won't be for a very long while. PCSX2 is x86-32 only and Play! is still not very mature yet (and even then, in the realm of a handheld pi is very much out of the question)

You may wish to start with a simpler project, there's too many things with a handheld that you need experience about.

The Pi4 for example, in an enclosure can reach its thermal maximum quite easily and throttle, hurting performance and possibly your hands.
Then there's batteries to think about, speakers, other heat management, controls, the screen, keeping it small, etc.

Thanks both of you :/ that's a shame, I was dreaming with a portable like that. I will do something simpler then :)

The Pi 4 currently has no support for RetroPie, the Raspbian image for consoles we all love. But in the near future it will work. Just wait

Since from Raspban's apt-repository, the many-machine-emulator MAME+MESS¹ works reasonalbe well on a Pi3 for many selected titles, and for more optimised emulation of popular consoles the Mednafen² emulator works even better, these two should also run extremely well on a Pi4 out of the Raspbian box.

Since these two emulators cover many retro machines, a handheld Pi4 is not so far away even with the standard Raspbian. No PS2 though.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install mame mednafen
(¹) Emulates most 8-bit and some 16-bit home-computers, several consoles, and most arcades.
(²) Emulates many popular consoles like Gameboy, NES, SNES, Megadrive, Saturn, Playstation.

Mednafen runs a lot better complied from source.

Why is this?

Do you happen to know if a source compiled Mednafen on a Pi3 runs the SNES emulation with 50 fps, like it does with the Megadrive emulation?

Because from Raspbian's repository and run on a Pi3, Mednafen gives 50fps for Megadrive emulation, but not so for SNES emulation.

The ones in the repo are usually old versions also you can set compiler flags and also enable sega saturn support to test.

No idea about SNES however dropping sound rate might help in the off file.

I always used snes9x for SNES games anyways.
