Can't overclock my pi3 (causes mouse lag)

Sun Dec 02, 2018 3:51 pm

Hello, it's my first post so hi everybody.

Let's rock.
I cannot overclock my pi 3b+. I'm using retropie (last two months I was using recalbox).
When I type vcgenmd measure_clock arm I get 6000000 (600Mhz)
The option in raspi-config is disabled (I get "This pi cannot be overclocked" error). I try to edit manualy config.txt - tried to change arm_freq from 600 to 1400, but I always get result 600Mhz - doesn't matter if I uncomment that # or not.
When I put arm_freq 1400 the system frezzes when I try to open that overclocking menu in rasp-conf.

Sorry for my english.

Anyone can help?

600 is the idle speed, under load it will automatically go to the max value (1400). No need to set any overclocks.

Yeah, but I have mouse lag in q1, q2, gemrb etc. I found solution on this forum, but in my case I can't change from 600Mhz to 1400Mhz.

Right now I'm watching movie via kodi, ant it still shows 600Mhz via ssh putty.

Ok, now I see it - the title should be "I cant set the right cpu frequiency" or something like that.

There are no overcock options in the setting because there are no official overclocks for the 3B series.
For unofficial methods and overclocks, have a look at the RetroPie website wiki, there is a nice page on everything you need.
1.4GHz is near the max though already (that's 3B+ speeds)

As I said, the pi will automatically go to high speed when under load. When playing back video, it's usually HW accelerated, so not under heavy load.

In Recalbox you can change cpu frequency via menu, but it doesn't matter. I check again while playing q3 - when in upper corner shows the temperature warning I have ~850MHz. Still have mouse lag. I added that line about sound, but this doesn't help.

viewtopic.php?t=146862

I have same problem, and checkout last post. It's does not working if I change arm_freq.

I have retropie right now, I'm using it from 2 days and it's so much better than Recalbox.

I spend few hours searching for solution (about mouse and keyboard lag), but didn't find the answer. I have wired mouse and wireless keyboard (with usb reciver), trying to change that to wired keyboard but it didn't help.

if your playing retro games, i would advise you to go with RetroPie.

If you are getting temp warning, then it is throttling back and your solution is to find a way to cool the Pi.
It'll then run at the higher frequency.

I'm sure you could override it with force_turbo and other things and maybe stop the built in temp limits, but you may also not have a working Pi for long.

Mouse lag.
No idea, it could be the throttling and the pi cannot keep up anymore, it could be game settings, it could be the one off mouse polling thingy (you'd need to search for that) but give a wireless and wired mouse have problems, it probably is a game/speed problem.

Try the RetroPie forum or wiki for solutions.
They might know the games.

Thanks for answer, this is acually first post that help (helped?) me.

I'll check it out and edit this post as my progress will go (or not),

About mouse/keyboard lag: In Kodi everything works just fine. I think Dosbox (that SDL or something version) is okay too (I switch from Recalbox to RetroPie couse I read somewhere that Dosbox under pie is bettter, and that's right). I have problem (with lag) in ports of quake 1, 2, 3, gemrb (planescape) - so far I tested that. The idea of posting this on Retropie forum is good, I should try that :>>>

Edit.
Yeah, it's not. All in all I have issue with mouse/keyb. lag. Mouse acting like it was on ice, and sometimes I need to press 5 times lmb to work. One guy was having this issue too, but his solution is not working for me (link I posted before). I thought that is something wrong with my cpu_freq (but right know I know that it is something else). I have it in all apps (ports) in Retropie.

Ok, so my another topic in games section was deleted, and now I've warning [2]. I report this thread to delete, and make new one in proper section. That was so bad?

Probably as we now know it's not just an attempt to overclock as it started out.

The problem is; mouse lag in some games on RetroPie.

Have a read through viewforum.php?f=78 gaming section of this forum too, they have Q3lite (Q3 Arena iirc) among some other Quake talk in there.

Ok, so I added force_turbo line in config.txt, and reboot (all via ssh) and now I get:

blablabla
end kernel panic: not syncing: fatal exception in interrupt

So I think it's time to format sd card and install retropie. Again.

Yes, it does not help me.

Ok, another fresh install, and I've downloaded q3. Lag. I setup wifi and root password, and still have lag. Check out again after setup screen resolution (trying 480p, 720p, and 1080p, none of them affect lag) and sound. When I type lscpu in putty I get

CPU max MHz 1200
CPU min MHz 600

When I change the arm_freq from 800 (defualt) to 1400 my raspberry freeze (sometimes on retropie splashcreen, sometimes when I try to open raspi-conf.

After another reinstall I added that force_turbo=1 line, and now it's: (lscpu)

max 1200
min 1200

I start downloading that q3 package right now.
Still have lag.

As stated a number of times above, the Pi 3B+ WILL go to 1400 when loaded (1200 for the 3B), so changing the clock speed won't affect whatever is causing the mouse lag. It's not a CPU speed problem.

If its not the mouse poll setting, then no idea what this could be.

So I don't know why it's keeps freezing when I set arm_freq to 1400.

Ok, thanks for help, I will keep trying. At least Dosbox goes very well.

Not sure what settings you have defined, bt the default settings should be fine - the device will idle at 600, and boost up to 1400 as required, unless its overheats when it will throttle back to reduce temperatures. I suspect you have some combination of settings that is upsetting the SoC. Just revert back to defaults which should work fine.

Yeah, but I did it on fresh install (didn't change anything except ssh, root password and wifi to download q3 port).

Today I'll get another keyboard and mouse (however mouse working ok when I connect it to pc). I have few more ideas what may cause that lag, but I'm a little bit bored of changing settings and stuff. Stonekeep is waiting for me to finish. :>
