According to the API and the developer on this page, there isn't a way to change the players direction.

Not a Python API, but I've outlined how to tweak SDL to control movements here. Not trivial yet easier than poking at the executable with memory-watch or reverse-engineering the binary.

There have been other calls for this over the years, but the motivation for doing so has gone down over time. One reason is that the full Java Edition Minecraft can run on a Pi 3 or 3B+. This even works with a Spigot server enabled with RaspberryJuice, i.e the same Python APIs.
