Alpha testers needed for Scratch-GPIO control

Fri Aug 31, 2012 11:14 pm

Alpha testers needed for my Scratch GPIO package for the RPi - your going to need leds, resistors and determination :)

My final intended audience is primary school teachers and parents of young children - so it needs to just work:)

If you've got a bit of hardware and a little bit of time, I'd be very grateful if you could give it a go :)

Hey si,

I am hoping that I will receive my pi soon but will take a look at this when I'm all setup. I am used to programming an arduino so have all the LEDs ready,

hi
on a new image of RASPIAN
the install scripts run after a raspi-update
however does not run.
ive looked for the files blinktest.sb and rsc.sb and these seem to be missing post install. [used : "find -name *.sb " in the top directory]
happy to do more Alpha testing

At last :) Thanks very much - I'll be onto things tonight when I get home - thanks again :)

Great - glad at least the LED is the right way around (and hope you've a resistor in there as well!)

Just some background, you run ScratchGPIO from desktop - it trys to kill any previous pyhton handler prog running and the re-launches the handler prog again (big bodge but until someone does this properly it'll have to do)
I am running the Aug 16th Image.
I'm on the the 1st Raspbian and not done any updates so there's the 1st issue - I need to get myself up to speed :)
I think Stratch has moved to /usr/share/scratch
Thats where it is for me as well so that shouldn't be any issue but will check once I've moved to the Aug image when I get home
presume you are trying to kill previous instance but -9 is not an option!
Yes - as above - kill -9 works on my RPi - ned to check that one out
also see the connection issues.
The python handler waits for Scratch to go into Remote Sensor Connection mode and then makes the connection - those mesages are just useful info for debugging - don't panic.

I'm guessing that maybe you don't have a ScratchGPIO desktop icon or your not using it??

If no desktop icon , then run normal Scratch and enable Remote Sensors by right-clicking on bottom item in the Sensing section
Then sudo python /home/pi/simple_scratch_handler/scratch_gpio_handler.py and it should connect OK and then you should be off to the races :)

Thanks for feedback :)

hi,

having another look at it.

1)It is unclear where you expect the "missing" .sb files to be. youve told me two locations. The first loaction does not exist pre pr post running of the script.
2) I tried to click on the ikon and I get this error message in a message box:
Failed to execute child process "./simplesi_scratch_handler/scratch_gpio.sh" (Permission denied). That is why I looked at the .sh file and tries to run it from the command line
3)if I start scratch and enable RSC and then run the script it connects!

I'm reaaly confused myself - all I thought I told you was
blinktest.sb and rsc.sb should end up in /home/pi/Scratch
:)

Maybe there is no /home/pi/Scratch folder to save peoples files in anymore - there is on mine - maybe I created it manually ages ago and have forgotton

A simple blinktest is

Code: Select all

While Green Flag is pressed
forever
  broadcast pin11high
  wait 1 sec
  broadcast p11low
  wait 2 sec
and this will blink pin11

so you could try this out until I can get home and get things sorted :)
Failed to execute child process "./simplesi_scratch_handler/scratch_gpio.sh" (Permission denied)
Ah - I probably need to add in a

Code: Select all

 sudo chmod +x simplesi_scratch_handler/scratch_gpio.sh
Could you try this and see if that cures it please? :)

Great feedback - really really grateful for your time and efforts :)

ok we have lift off or blink off at least!

I had a little play with you code and it worked.
Ithen worked through your suggestions

I think you must have created the /home/pi/Scratch directory...
I created it and rerun the script and the MISSING .SB files appeared!
I did the CHMOD and now the ICON works

GREAT NEWS! thanks a lot!

NOw to work on getting scratch faster!

Excellent - looking like midnight before I can get home to alter the installer but it'll be done before bedtime

PS where does Scratch default saving/loading files from now (and does it work - I remember now that the default didn't work!)

For speed issues have a read and join in here http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 77&t=12522 :)

Well just loaded up Raspbian 2012-08-16 and before I did anything, I went looking at the file system and I have a /home/pi/Scratch folder so that's a bit strange that you didn't have it on yours.

So all I've done is add in the sudo chmod +x /home/pi/simplesi_scratch_handler/scratch_gpio.sh and tried it out.

At the moment - its sitting doing nothing - seemingly hung on "Building dependancy package... 0%" :(

I think I'll go back to the old way of installing the GPIo library package

Ok went back to old way of installing the GPIO drivers and it worked fine.

Desktop icon got created, and the blinktest and rsc files ended up in the /home/pi/Scratch folder and worked OK :)

So, I'm going to wipe SD card - install 2012-08-16 image , do an update and see what happens then

Hi .

you seem to be getting there with an updated script on drop box over night.

below is a screen grab from a terminal on a virgin Raspian Aug 2012 SD card pot update.
NOTE this was done before I saw your posting saying you had updated this morning.
Firstly i demonstrate that Scratch is not in in the pi directory but this is probably a mute point

The only error seem to be in the creation of the documents/scratch projects directory. I think you need to include QUOTE MARKS " else you end up creating two seperate directories one being PROJECTS and the other SCRATCH

you can see from the dump below I did this and then the CP woked

Hi

Thanks a great addition to the Pi.

I ran the installer and it initially failed to install correctly. Looks like the directory "Scratch Projects" is missing from

/home/pi/Documents

I manually created it, re ran the installer and it now works. I have been able to get it to control all 6 LEDS and read in a push switch on pin 7.

If you would like me to test anything specific please let me know. (robin.knight@blueyonder.co.uk)

Do you need help creating a script and tests in it for what already exists?

@DukeOfTarporley and @rknigh21

I think I've squared the circle finally :)

It seems that Documents/Scratch Projects is created on first run of normal Scratch which is why I thought it already existed but of course its not there if the 1st thing you do after making a SD card is to run my script :)

So V1.1 will create it if it doesn't exist already.

Sorted ( fingers crossed)

Thanks for help and feedback :)

Re: Alpha testers needed for Scratch-GPIO control

Sun Sep 09, 2012 8:53 pm

Noticed something strange yesterday at Manchester RaspberryJam that the first time I launched ScratchGPIO from the desktop, nothing seemed to happen - try it again and it worked.

I put it down to dodgy doubleclicking my young Scratch testers (Robert and Jacob) but having just tried it myself - it happened to me as well.

So I've run the gpio_scratch.sh file (Which is what the ScratchGPIO desktop icon points to) in its own LX Terminal window and its not launching Scratch after it runs scratch_gpio_handler.py.

(It does end up launching once you try again in a second window so I need to make the 2 halves of the script run simultaneously and not one after each other

I tested it, and works great. Except for one thing; I have a Rev2-board and pin 13 doesn't use GPIO21 anymore, but GPIO27 (http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/1929), so pin 13 doesn't work at this time. Can you fix this?

The next release of RPi.GPIO which this Scratch interface uses automatically detects rev 2 boards and this should fix the issue. Release due in the next few days - I'm run off my feet at the moment.
