kernel will boot on pi2 but not on pi3

Thu May 05, 2016 6:01 pm

I have been working on a debian-style 4.4 kernel (based off generating patches from the foundation git repo and applying them to Debian kernel source). On a pi2 it boots fine, but on a pi3 it hangs at the rainbow screen.

Are there any kernel configuration settings that are needed for a successfull boot on a pi3 but not needed for a successful boot on a pi2.

This normally indicates that the firmware needs to be updated. For example on Wheezy the rpi3 will only give a rainbow screen until the SD card has been updated on a rpi2b with rpi-update.

Ok, I was wrong, it did boot eventually but it took it's sweet time.

I encountered the same issue on the pi1 (but strangely no the pi2) and it was fixed by bringing my pi1 config closer to the foundation one ( I never did get to the bottom of exactly which config setting caused it). I will try doing the same for the pi2.
