What is the recommended process to update Raspbian 2019-07 to 2019-09 in place?

TIA

Already answered now, but there is existing Raspberry Pi documentation on the topic: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... pdating.md

Thanks for prompt responses - apologies, I should have stated that I had already run the apt commands but it came back saying no packages to be updated.

Has the 2019-09 actually completed on my machine without my realising or might I be doing something wrong around the apt?

Can't pull screenshot at the moment but basically tried both sudo apt and sudo apt-get variants and got back no packages to be updated.

As before, TIA.

Edit: jumped on another machine and pulled the following --

pi@rpi-1:~ $ sudo apt update
Hit:1 http://archive.raspberrypi.org/debian buster InRelease
Hit:2 http://raspbian.raspberrypi.org/raspbian buster InRelease
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
All packages are up to date.
pi@rpi-1:~ $ sudo apt full-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

Then ran uname --

pi@rpi-1:~ $ uname -srm
Linux 4.19.66-v7+ armv7l

So - for some reason looks like the kernel is neither the 2019-07 nor the 2019-09 versions mentioned in the release notes.

Slightly confused ...

Releases take a while.

The repo should be in sync soon if it isn't already.

So you do appear to be running Raspbian Buster as you first reported, and the response from Moderator/Engineer @ShiftPlusOne is probably the best current advice.

(the reason for asking was that if you had been mistaken and were still running a Raspbian Stretch OS, updated packages are getting less frequent.)

It only runs a list update not an upgrade of packages.

Thanks to all for responses - I will retry the apt route over the coming days. Additionally I will burn a 2019-09 Lite to SD and have a wander round that just as an exercise.

Has something changed here? "apt update; apt dist-upgrade" hasn't normally done the trick of moving to a new Raspbian when the release contains new packages, as it does this time. Won't rpi-eeprom and Mousepad, at the least, be missing?

Yes, but the rpi-eeprom change is still not something we want everybody to get automatically - gradual rollout just in case there are any issues. And the mousepad change is optional and mostly just there for the x86 build.

Return to “Raspbian”
