Is there a way to encrypt a single folder on a USB stick or usb drive

Sat Feb 23, 2019 2:33 pm

Hi,
Is there a way, while using Raspbian and a Rasberry Pi, to encrypt a single folder on an attached USB stick or usb drive? I don't wan to encrypt the SD card just a folder on attached storage.

Regards Steve

Veracrypt lets you do that. If the USB stick is FAT formatted you can even have an encrypted container that can be read and written on your RPi and your Win10 laptop.

cryfs, encfs, or gocryptfs are similar command-line utilities that mount encrypted data as a folder at a place you choose, using fuse.

sirikali is a GUI app that can manage them.

Thanks for your suggestion. This looks fairly straight forward. I'll try it out.

Thanks for your reply. I will try all of these out.

My experiences on the last one week where I'm trying to use Veracrypt on Raspberry Pi 3 B (Raspbian Stretch):

- Veracrypt doesn't support Raspbian since version 1.21
- You can't use a NTFS formatted HDD
- The console Version is a mess to use
- Against the documentation, you can't use it on Windows if you have encrypted a partition on Raspbian and otherwise it also doesn't work (The HDD is getting lost and can't be connected to Raspbian)
- The AES 256 Encryption is not supported
- and so much more failures, which you can find in the issues tab of github o_O
- If you wish to get support on the Veracrypt forum, you have to wait several days to get enabled to post a thread or to answer on sourceforge

In response to the original question I use :
tcplay to create and use truecrypt containers, mounted as folders, on a USB memory stick
cryptsetup to create and use LUKS encrypted containers, mounted as folders, on a USB memory stick
Both are in the Raspbian repositories and easy to use - I recommend both

Return to “Raspbian”
