Slow boot with apt-daily.service

Thu Nov 08, 2018 3:32 pm

Hello everyone,
I am not sure where to post this so I put it here

On the first boot of the day I get the green LED to stay on for hours (literally) and the pi is very slow during that time. I will usually reboot and then it seems to work fine. Trying to investigate I issued
systemd-analyze blame
and this is what came back:
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ systemd-analyze blame
58min 27.201s apt-daily.service
17.743s apt-daily-upgrade.service
I then went on to Google and found nothing on pi but on Ubuntu and in this post
it was suggested that I should override the configuration of apt-daily timer
the command was
sudo systemctl edit apt-daily.timer

This opened a new file in
/etc/systemd/system/apt-daily.timer.d
and created the file override.conf in which I added the following:
[Timer]
OnBootSec=15min
OnUnitActiveSec=1d
AccuracySec=1h
RandomizedDelaySec=30min
I rebooted and hoped that the next day would be nicer.
Alas, the problem remains

Has anyone else experienced the same problem?
Have I done something wrong?
Is there a solution to long booting times?

Perhaps it would help to state what Operating System is installed and running on your RPi?

I have never seen 'long' boot times on any of my RPi systems, all of which run the Raspberry Pi Foundation recommended and supported Raspbian Operating System. Usually 'up' and on the network in a minute or so, possibly less. So quickly that it has never occurred to me to time it.

Thank you
I am using a pi 3B with the 2018-06-27 version of Stretch. I am not 100% sure but I believe that the previous version (2018-04-18) did not present this problem. I also just noticed that there is a new version of stretch and at some point I will try it.

I flashed the latest Raspbian (Version:October 2018, Release date:2018-10-09) to my SD card and all problems went away.
Super fast booting!
Thank you guys!
