Firefox 58 on Raspbian Jessie?

Fri Jan 26, 2018 3:38 pm

Hello,

I personally dislike Chrome, it is slower than Firefox (at least on any of my other Windows computers), and it just isn't a great choice for a default Raspbian browser. So, I tried installing and running Firefox 58.0 from here, but then I noticed some of the packages that are required to run don't appear to be available for Raspbian.

Is it even possible to, somehow, run Firefox on Raspbian Jessie? If so, how?

Thank you!

Firefox-ESR is available from the repositories, but the default chromium-browser is better:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt install firefox-esr
https://packages.debian.org/stretch/firefox-esr

What you attempted to install is for x86 cpu architecture, which the RPi does not have..

Google Chrome is also not available for Debian ARMHF.

Oh, yeah, I somehow forgot that I had to search for an ARM package. I guess I forget things very quickly... Well, it is possible to emulate x86, but it would probably be even slower than the pre-Quantum Firefox. Too bad :(

Chromium is better IMO, but new version updates for RPi repo is very rare to see.

Chromium V51 > V56 > V60 > V6x (5)?

Edit: Firefox (ESR) has better settings to reduce memory usage, that point would be better for Raspberry Pi. During my small "test", noticed biggest difference on Youtube page loading times.

Firefox 58 on Raspbian Jessie? That's a really interesting question. I think the newest Firefox >56 is a relly new build and not similar to the old Firefox.
The RAM consumption should be much lower, this is an important point, because we have only 1GB in the RPi 3.

Hope new FF will come soon to us 8-)

Firefox RIP. Try Vivaldi - works well on a Pi (and other platforms)

Up to version 54 you could always install Firefox from ports.ubuntu.com: 14.0.4 versions for Jessie and 16.0.4 versions for Stretch.

But all newer versions now simply crash.

Heh heh.

No more and no less so than people suggesting Chrom(ium).

Vivaldi is my choice, too - works very well. Faster than Chrom(ium) and seems to chew up less memory.
