That's pretty funny. I ran it the other day and sudo did not work. I thought I had a bad download. Did not even think of just installing it! I still have it on the card so I guess I will install sudo. :D

Can you make this Raspbian Server Edition image as clean as an installation with only the "SSH server" task installed?

Here is a copy of the output from "dpkg --list" and "cd /; ls -alR" to show what is installed and what files exist:

Raspbian fresh installation with only SSH server task selected: dpkg --list

Raspbian fresh installation with only SSH server task selected: cd /; ls -alR

I *could* do that...but if you have already got an install like that, why not just make an image of the SD card ?

RSE v2.1 released

Reinstalled Sudo into the image
also update raspi-config a bit more, it now has a network configurator of sorts.

Linky !

Feedback is always welcome

Downloading now. Incredibly useful for a 1GB SD card I have lying around, for a non-performance critical server.

Thanks!

Hey all total noob with anything not windows or gui based. Wondering if any overheads using this as opposed to stock raspbian with gui loaded? Also any benefit to use this compared to the full raspian without the gui loaded. Running sabnzbdplus and trying to free up resources the pi seems to max itself according to the cpu usage.

This has less overheads as there is no gui installed, so less system resources is used up by not having a gui.
Space is also saved as I have removed a whole bunch of packages.

If you already have a working setup, then you would probably be better off having a look at the output of 'top' and see what is using all of your resources.

Any idea how much 'overhead' is saved by just not starting the GUI in Raspian (and leaving the memory split at 'minimum video' memory)?

I understand there are a lot of packages removed, which saves space on the SD card and allows you to run on a 1GB card, just curious how the actual performance is between this release and the stock Raspian...

Great project, BTW, thanks for making it available to the community!

Unfortunately I don't run a Pi with a GUI so I couldn't tell you.
Feel free to try them both out and report back though :)
I'll be getting a Pi with a GUI running sometime soon hopefully so I may have some stats later on.

I've just tested the RSE2.3 image and it works fine. Good work there SirLagz. Any other image (apart from wheezy) didnt work on my RPi B-Model with a Class10 Sdcard. As stated in this thread http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewt ... 66&t=36210

Yours seems to work perfect.

I got a question though, on the initial raspi-config I selected Turbo for overclocking and got "bug bad rss" counter, the system not starting up. From what intel Ive gathered all Rpis should be able to overclock to maximum without a breach in warranty. Why isnt this working on my model? Maybe you have an idea?

Also: Is there any other way to changing the overclock setting apart from "re-dd-ing" a fresh image onto the sd?

Not sure why it wouldn't work when overclocking...
If you want to disable overclocking, you should be able to modify the config.txt file and remove / modify the overclocking lines.

Apparently this is so popular that all my website bandwidth has disappeared
I may get some downtime at the end of this month due to lack of bandwidth, but I'll be getting newer versions mirrored so this doesn't happen again

true that!

depending on your intended use you might want to take a look at picore

Since my blog is now out of bandwidth, I'm self-hosting the images myself, though the speeds aren't great.

Much appreciated! Downloading...
But maybe you should think about hosting it at Dropbox? Not complaining about download speed, 130kb/s ist ok for me but to save bandwith for your own private needs :)

Do you have a script to remove the packages from an already installed Raspbian image? Would save me some trouble. :)
