Idea: use AP mode on RPi3 for easy setup

Tue Mar 08, 2016 8:59 am

Imagine if the NOOBS installer or Raspbian automagically put up a RPi3-Setup AP and a simple self contained server if there were no mouse/keyboard/screen connected. Then anyone with a $40 Android phone or some other kind of web browser could set up the Pi initially.

I probably won't get to do this any time soon but it's worth a look.

That works well for Chromecast, except they chose to implement configuring via an app rather than simply making it an AP with a web server presenting a configuration page which could be setup using any browser.

That's actually not a bad idea, although you probably would want to randomise the AP name slightly with the last 4 bytes of the MAC so you could setup more than one at once.
