I suppose this will run kodi as user "kodi". It will store its file in a different place then when you run it as user "pi".
Starting kodi from the desktop or command line will run it as user "pi" and will use different settings etc.
So I do not recommend this.

I made Kodi 16.0 "Jarvis" available in the PiPplware repo, if there is someone interested.

To install it on Raspbian Jessie you can follow the instructions in this post:
viewtopic.php?p=832735#p832735

There is also Kodi 17 Alpha1 in the unstable repo, but it is still in early development so I recommend to use Kodi 16.

Did you use popcornmix backports for this version?

Yes. It also has joystick/gamepad support.

I am more interested in that the actual repository-version of Raspbian gets an update to v16.... :mrgreen:

Btw, is the Youtube addon defect? Search does not work here actually, only saying bad request...for a short moment I saw something like "marked as abandoned"....is it dead?

Actually, this Kodi packages are based on the Raspbian's (foundation) repository version.
The Debian scripts are the same, so compile/configure options, packaging, dependencies, etc, are the same. You can check the *debian.tar.xz also in Pipplware repo.

The only things changed from the original Kodi source code is:
- The inclusion of popcormix optimizations/additions for the Raspberry Pi available here:
https://github.com/popcornmix/xbmc/tree ... _backports
- The addition of gamepads/joystick support. The configuration of joysticks is the same as other platforms. Check the Kodi wiki.
- Some changes to /usr/bin/kodi script to prevent some Raspbian/Kodi bugs like black screen on exit, framebuffer (fbi) and CEC.

Relatively to Youtube, other addons and repositories, there isn't any change.
The problem with Youtube is that, it is currently unmantained, since the last developer stopped working on it. And yes, search is not working as it is, but if you initiate session with your Youtube account, everything seems to be working fine. There is also some workarounds (not tested) for the Youtube addon if you don't want to login with your account. You can find all this information here:

Hi, I'll just drop this in here in case anyone else has the same problem. Upgrading libraspberry* and raspberrypi-bootloader packages from 1.20160209-1 to 1.20160225-1 broke DTS passthrough via HDMI for me in Kodi. I confirmed the issue by downgrading the packages to previous versions and everything was again working without any changes to configuration. The issue existed with vanilla Raspbian Kodi and Pipplware Kodi 16. I posted a comment about this in github also but I don't know if that's the correct place https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/issues/548
My setup: RP2b -> HDMI -> Sony KDL 46HX tv -> Sony STR DB-790 amp (dts and dd only, no hd support). MMAL on, OMX off.

Well, DTS passtrough is working fine here with the latest kernel (4.1.18-v7+ #846). From what I read in your bug report, if I understood correctly, it seems to be a problem in VDR Raspberry Pi HD Device. Best report to them.

Hmm... my case really isn't related to VDR since I'm not using it at all (and I'm assuming we are talking about the Video Disk Recorder software here). Just the standard up-to-date Raspbian + Kodi. Currently the last working kernel for me is 4.1.17-v7+ #838. When I upgrade the packages to the latest versions via aptitude the kernel goes to 4.1.18-v7+ #846 and the DTS passthrough stops working. Or at least there is no sound from my amp.

[UPGRADE] libraspberrypi-bin:armhf 1.20160209-1 -> 1.20160225-1
[UPGRADE] libraspberrypi-dev:armhf 1.20160209-1 -> 1.20160225-1
[UPGRADE] libraspberrypi-doc:armhf 1.20160209-1 -> 1.20160225-1
[UPGRADE] libraspberrypi0:armhf 1.20160209-1 -> 1.20160225-1
[UPGRADE] raspberrypi-bootloader:armhf 1.20160209-1 -> 1.20160225-1

Downgrading these packages to previous versions makes the DTS passthrough work again after reboot. Maybe we have different hardware and the problem just doesn't appear in your setup.

I'm really at lost how the Raspbian bug tracking works and where I should report to about this. But I'll be happy to provide more info if it helps someone to fix the issue. When browsing the github changes in the firmware, this commit seemed to be the only one that touched the passthrough stuff, at least based on the developer's comment https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware ... 2a75697a26.

I have tested in this connection scheme:
Pi -> HDMI -> AV Receiver -> HDMI -> TV
Speakers connected to AV Receiver.

DTS Passthrough is working using Pipplware 5.1, running my Kodi 16.0 Jarvis packages. Pipplware 5.1 is based on latest Raspbian Jessie with same kernel and firmware, so it should be the same in Raspbian Jessie (2016-02-26):

Code: Select all

Linux pipplware 4.1.18-v7+ #846 SMP Thu Feb 25 14:22:53 GMT 2016 armv7l GNU/Linux

My connection is Pi -> HDMI -> Sony TV -> Optical -> Sony Receiver -> Speakers.
I just re-tested this with your Kodi 16.0 Jarvis packages before posting my previous reply and it is still broken with the latest Raspbian kernel. In Kodi configuration I have enabled HDMI passthrough, AC3 and DTS, otherwise the settings are pretty much on defaults.

With Pipplware Kodi I was able to get sound from DTS tracks with the new kernel if I enabled both DTS-HD and the AC-3 transcoding. But then my DTS streams were transcoded to DD which is less than optimal. With the older kernel my receiver shows that is is receiving DTS 3/2.1, with new kernel there is just silence. I don't doubt that the new kernel works for you but it sure doesn't work for me.

Hmm, it could be a SPDIF only issue. A friend of mine has also tested DTS passthrough in a similar setup as yours, with the only difference in HDMI connection oposed to SPDIF. It works for him also.
And the problem may be with that kernel commit. Maybe the best for you is to post a comment in that commit, explaining your situation / problem.

Hi,

here are my tests. The outputs are identical for both kernels. Maybe the fact that vcgencmd shows hdmi_stream_channels=1 in both cases could be some kind of clue (I'll post this info in the github as well). So hdmi_stream_channels was 1 always when the file was playing and 0 when it was stopped.

Working kernel: 4.1.17-v7+ #838 SMP Tue Feb 9 13:15:09 GMT 2016 armv7l GNU/Linux

Code: Select all

     AC3 supported: Max channels: 6, Max samplerate:  48kHz, Max rate  640 kb/s.

$ vcgencmd hdmi_stream_channels
hdmi_stream_channels=1
Non-working kernel: 4.1.18-v7+ #846 SMP Thu Feb 25 14:22:53 GMT 2016 armv7l GNU/Linux

Code: Select all

$ tvservice -a

Hey,
I've got a current Raspbian installation with a kodi-jessie 15-2-3 running on raspi 2 latest modell at 900mhz.

I've made the latest updates and upgrades but it is not working if I start it by menu or file explorer (double click on startkodi file).

Here is the crash log:

Which version are you running? From the OP or the repository?
How large is your GPU memory?

#1 it starts with the blue bubble background screen but no menus.

#2 After a few seconds the screen is black, access only by ssh or remote desktop.

#3 I have noops (Dec 2015) and installed raspbian, later booted OpenElec a few times, but my problems mentioned above occured under raspbian and the OP Installation,

but I had started with the files from Michael (http://michael.gorven.za.net) before I switched in January to the OP Version.

#4 I did all the update and upgrade stuff, use Realtek WiFi, samba, proftp, ...

I still can't seem to get kodi to autostart on boot. I'm running Raspbian Jessie and followed the instructions in the OP. I didn't have an /etc/default/kodi file, so I created it and added ENABLED=1 to it. This didn't do anything, though, probably because I don't have an /etc/init.d/kodi file. I also tried the steps here: http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Autostart_ ... nit_script making sure all the paths were correct, but that didn't work either.

Any ideas?

No I never tried it and I really don't understand why anyone wants to do that. For me a kodi installation on Raspbian only makes sense, if I can use it as a program like any other one.
I would use OpenElec for a system that boots directly into kodi.

@stickperson
If you install the stock Raspbian Kodi or Pipplware 16 Kodi you can get the autostart working without any additional hassle (all the required scripts & user account creation are in the debian packages). Just edit /etc/default/kodi and set your system to boot into console with raspi-config. That's how I have my system set up.

Yes, I will do this and try to create a documentation and Backup after each - major - step.
One question regarding the OP and these 15.2 Jessie configuration:

Code: Select all

CFLAGS="-I/opt/vc/include/ -I/opt/vc/include/interface/vcos/pthreads -I/opt/vc/include/interface/vmcs_host/linux -mfloat-abi=hard -mcpu=cortex-a7 -mfpu=neon-vfpv4" CXXFLAGS="-I/opt/vc/include/ -I/opt/vc/include/interface/vcos/pthreads -I/opt/vc/include/interface/vmcs_host/linux -mfloat-abi=hard -mcpu=cortex-a7 -mfpu=neon-vfpv4" LDFLAGS="-L/opt/vc/lib" FFMPEG_OPTS="--cpu=cortex-a7" ./configure --prefix=/usr --disable-debug --enable-optimizations --with-platform=raspberry-pi --enable-player=omxplayer --disable-x11 --disable-sdl --disable-vaapi --disable-vdpau --disable-xrandr --disable-joystick --enable-airplay --enable-mid --enable-rsxs --enable-afpclient --disable-external-ffmpeg --enable-non-free --enable-dvdcss --enable-ccache --enable-alsa --enable-libusb --enable-libbluray --enable-libcec --disable-projectm --disable-pulse
What do I have to do with these lines?
Thanks a lot.

Nothing. Those were the compiler and configuration options used for building the package.

GOTT sei Dank - new installation is still running and updating from the scratch (NOOB 1.8).

Seems to work well apart from a few bugs. I am usingthe pipplware repo, and o get a black screen when i tey to change the resolution from desktop. Also exit does not work. I tried the scripts but was unabe to it working.

Anyone have fixes for these bugs?
