Is there a roadmap or wishlist to Raspberry Pi vNEXT?

Mon Feb 09, 2015 11:50 am

Hi RasPi-Team,

is there a user feedback system (like UserVoice), roadmap or wishlist to Raspberry Pi vNEXT?

I would like to post some wishes, like:
[*] GPU performance upgrade with support for H.265/HEVC codec
[*] eMMC modul (like ODROID)
[*] 3.5mm (4 pin or separate 3 pin) audio jack with microphone support (without external soundcard!)
[*] Safe power- & reset-button
[*] 1Gbit ethernet port
[*] All external ports on one side
[*] Take over the 'Raspberry Pi Thin Client project' as an offically & community-driven OS

Best regards,
Christian

There have been a number of threads on the subject, most of your requests have already been made multiple times.

The difficulty is finding chips that support all the options, whilst maintaining a upgrade path that is backward compatible.

Since the B2 has only just been released (3 years after the original) that should give some idea of the time scales involved, so holding breath is not recommended.

Good grief we were just blessed with the Pi 2. And you are already after another upgrade.

You might have notice that the Pi 2 was kept secret util it was launched. It's likely that will be the case for an future Pi.

As many have said here before one key strength of the Pi is the compatibility of OS and software from revision to revision. And the prospect that things will remain compatible for a long time. All that documentation, all those documents all the blogs and adive on forum threads will be valid for a long time thus fostering ease of use and a huge community of users all on the same page.

Building a radically different machine would fracture all of that.

Then there is the little matter of the cost of undertaking such development and the resulting end price.

I'm sure there are ARM boards out there already that provide most or al of what you want.

Seriously? We've only just got Pi 2 out of the door - give us a minute to catch our breath!

My goodness guys,

I do realize that there is no new version of raspberry pi soon.

I especially would like to point out that a user feedback system would make sense.

The people could submit there suggestions or confirm others and the raspberrry pi
team would know what the people want, without thousands of duplicate posts!
So win-win for both sides!

Do not be so aggressive, I just want to make some suggestions and have seen
that this isn't possible on a useful way.

So keep cool guys :-)

My guess is that the Raspberry "2 Pi r" will be just like the Pi 2, just with the U16 flash bug cured :)

ChristianK83,

Sorry if the responses seem a bit harsh. It's just that this kind of suggestion pops up here every other day. You are new here and perhaps have not noticed that.

I suspect that this very forum is plenty feed back enough. Raspi Foundation people are reading a lot here all the time.

As for "...and the raspberrry pi team would know what the people want,...", it seems to me that with 4 million units shipped the raspi team has a good handle on what people want :)

I think the core problem (with these kinds of threads) is that everybody knows what we want.

In the words of Andrea True: MORE, MORE, MORE [*]

I.e., there's really no mystery about it - and thus no need for these threads. It's just a matter of getting it (and not having it add too much to the cost).

[*] Oh, yeah, and an on-board x86 CPU…

There are clearly some things that a large number of people want. Gig ethernet, USB3 are the two that come straight to mind. And of course, the Foundation knows this.

Exactly my point. Well stated.

Those are the other two that come to mind...

And note, I'm certainly not saying new Pi's will get those, because I simply don't know.

I was tempted to discuss Microsoft Windows but won't :D

Sales figures don't reveal what people might want or would like.

That's why I mentioned the on-board x86 co-processor.

Like in the old days when you could get a Z80 co-processor for your Apple ][ (so you could run CP/M).

OK, so the OP has been answered. Let's not have another lengthy thread on the subject......
