Best software for mobile audio player

I just got a raspberry pi for the first time. I haven't installed any software yet, but my plan is to make an audio player for my car. I want to see if I can get something so that when the pi turns on, it automatically loads the software and starts playing a random song from its playlist. Anyone have any suggestions for what I could do?

I would use mpd, but there may be other options that would suit you better.

In term of good music player you should try cmus or moc.

Moc is a good choice if you have no screen on your pi. It can work as a server and get command from terminal which is good for easy GPIO interfacing.

Ok, I will look into these. Are they like an OS themselves, or do I need to install an OS and add them?

They should all run on Raspbian.
