Is it possible media & BitTorrent

Sun May 04, 2014 11:24 pm

I'm looking into getting a Pi

But is it possible to have both the media, so I can watch movies and music on the tv & a bit torrent box all in one.

Worse case if not possible on one sd card is it possible to do this on 2 and swap over cards when needed.

You burn a Rasbian image on a SD card, boot the Pi up, get a copy of Transmission source, compile it, Run its daemon and control it via Web interface. When you finish downloading a movie, use the command 'omxplayer' to watch it.

I was told there are some 'media center distribution' who have a good interface to control the movie playback.

I'm not sure if the CPU is completely idle when using GPU via omxplayer for playback. Well, anyway, if you feel Transmission is using up too much resource, use the --enable-lightweight option when compile it.

Install OpenElec or Raspbmc or Xbian . When they are installed install plugin of choice for torrent (rtorrent, bittorrent or tranmission). watch movies, shows, listen to music, see pics and download torrents... all on same card and same OS.

i use OpenElec where i added tranmission plugin. i upload torrents via web browser from another computer, though i could do it directly in openelec. i also install youtube plugin so kids can watch cartoons on youtube.

with these distributions it is good to have CEC capable remote controler for TV so you can just use TV remote to browse the OS. further options are cheap small wi-fi keyboard as well as smartphone to be used to remote controler.

With a fast Internet connection you will probably get some of the known freezing problems. You probably need an external powered hard drive or an external powered USB hub with a hard drive to get it to work.
