I have a spare 2GB card here, and I am looking for an OS that will fit on there. Or any other project suggestions. I am a very beginner to be clear.

Most of the RPi OSes need 4GB min. NOOBS needs 8GB minimum.
Save that 2GB card to use in your camera buy an 8GB card.

The only OSes I can think of that fit comfortably onto a 2GB card are the OpenELEC and RaspBMC media centres... if you count them as being a OSes.

Alternatively, you may end up multi-booting OSes from an external hard drive some day. A 2GB card has stacks of room for holding multiple OS boot folders.

picore based on tiny core linux.

don't expect it to be a friendly easy to use OS.

Tiny Core Linux is not a traditional distribution but a toolkit to create your own customized system. It offers not only flexibility, small footprint but a very recent kernel and set of applications making it ideal for custom systems, appliances as well as to learn Linux, matching Raspberry Pi perfectly. It is running entirely in RAM. There is no installation in conventional terms; extensions mounted read only, after reboot the same clean system is available. Base raw SD card image with CLI version is only 21.5 Mbyte including RPi boot loader, firmware and support files

Raspbian can fit on a 512MB card if you use this installer.
https://github.com/hifi/raspbian-ua-netinst

I don't know what Arch weighs nowadays, but it should fit comfortably too.

I am not sure that I would recommend either of these options to a beginner though. They both come with the bare essentials and you need to install whatever you need yourself.

Another vote for the "don't make life difficult" category!

Apart from a few developers, everyone in the world was a beginner with the RPi at some time in the last 2 years.

There is a lot to be learned from installing a very basic operating system and tailoring it to your own needs. But (for most people) that is not a good way to start getting experience. [A bit like learning to drive by first having to assemble the engine.] **

An 'official' 8Gb card with the NOOBS installer pre-installed is available - at least in the UK - for 4gbp, about 7usd. I suggest that is money worth spending to save your time and frustration. http://swag.raspberrypi.org/collections ... gb-sd-card

** Come to think of it, that is actually what I did, but I don't think it is a good model for everyone!

you can throw away all what concerns X

But it's not a job for a newbie.

Eventually have a look : some people have done such images.

After enjoy tty and ssh :-)

Pretty sure you can get a raspbian install with x onto a 2GB card, you just can't get all the bloat the foundation load up on there.

Why not try Slitaz-ARM:
http://forum.slitaz.org/topic/slitaz-on ... post-28330

I'm using slitaz (v4.0) already on an old laptop and on an aged PC. It's great!
Fast, stable and as lean as they come.
