Help with BrickPi Please!

Wed Oct 16, 2013 9:36 pm

Hello all,
I'm sorry if I am posting this in the wrong section, I probably am, But I need help with my BrickPi for my graduation project please, and I need help fast.
After several days of confusion and one with a couple IT guys, I've gotten to the point where the RaspberryPi is all set up and booted into raspbian, I've attached the BrickPi and the case and everything, i can control the RaspberryPi through Command line from a separate laptop, although i have to use an ethernet cord to access internet on the Pi, and I went to the Python Idle application on the GUI desktop of the Raspberry pi and cloned some files from github that were necessary and tried to run the Lego Motor Test .py (or something along those lines) and after pretty much anything I do (removing cords and placing them somewhere else, replacing motors and such) i always get the error " No module named BrickPi" NOT Setuptools, BrickPi. i cant find anything online about this and if someone else has had this issue and knows how to fix it it would be greatly appreciated if you could help me, my graduating pretty much depends on it.

Thank you in advance, please ask questions

A similar question was asked a few days ago and got no solutions offered. I suggested there that the enquirer try the dedicated BrickPi forum.

Hello Cubanbejar,

This is a little confusing, a few questions:
Did you clone the entire BrickPi_Python Directory? The example programs reference a file called "BrickPi.py" that has the drivers for communicating with the BrickPi.

Also, this has tripped a few people up. To install the python module, be sure to first run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install python-setuptools
and then

Code: Select all

sudo python setup.py install
(More info on getting python setup can be found here: http://www.dexterindustries.com/BrickPi ... it/python/

Also, if you're not using the BrickPi Image, did you succesfully run through all of the image changes recommended here: http://www.dexterindustries.com/BrickPi ... d/pi-prep/
?
If you're not using the image we have provided, even if the python software is working, you will get some errors (and things won't work in general) unless the modified wiringPi is installed, and the changes outlined are made in the above link.

I'd like to hear how it goes. Please update.

I would also point you towards the BrickPi forums:

@John Cole, Dexter Industries

Thanks for stepping in to assist with these recent enquiries.

However, I think your advice to run

Code: Select all

apt-get install python-setuptools
is likely to cause further frustration, as it will fail if followed literally.

@DeeJay

Did I forget a sudo in there? Would this be a more constructive command?

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install python-setuptools

If you start with a fresh Raspbian image, the instructions on the BrickPi site should work. They were tested last month and a couple of small fixes were made. Can you start from a clean SD card image and then follow the instructions one after another? If you get any warnings or error messages, can you post them on this forum?

Best regards,

Will

It looks like the fixes have not gone into the brickpi installation page yet. Please refer to:

If you just need Python and Scratch access to the BrickPi, then Raspbian and the instructions in the BrickPi article in Issue 23 of The MagPi (http://www.themagpi.com) produce a working setup.
