The nano USB WiFi adapter that ModMyPi sell is brilliant, and works out of the box with Raspbian.

Was wrestling with a Netgear WN111v2 with no luck.
I had another model of Netgear adaptor lying around, WNDA3100v2. Windows only, no available Linux drivers. The only Netgear model I know works with Linux is the WNA1100. Got one at local Walmart for around $30 US. Works fine out of the box.
