Re: We're visiting the testing labs tomorrow

Mon Apr 02, 2012 6:26 pm

Just a quick heads up - Eben and I are going to Wales to visit the testing lab tomorrow, so tweeting and posting here will be light or non-existent while we're on the road and in the lab. I'm pleased not just at the business of being able to observe testing, but also because I'll get to spend the evening with my best friend, who moved to Wales in the autumn and who I've not seen since. (And Eben is always happy to visit the land of his fathers^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hmother.)

Not promising anything, but we may be in a position to post some graphs and updates tomorrow night. Keep your fingers crossed!

Is this the time for some sheep jokes?

Eben tells a story about a childhood trip to visit his grandparents, where the Upton family car was stuck behind a Morris Minor which had a sheep in the front passenger seat. True story, corroborated by the Upton parents. (He does not respond well to Welsh sheep jokes in general, that said.)

The sheep story doesn't surprise me. I have friends with a farm in Hereford near the Welsh borders. It can be pretty remote and everyone seems to walk about wearing wellies and trousers held up with baler twine. And that's just the women!

Don't forget to turn all your phones and other electronics items off when you get there

(not just to stop Kernal tracking you to the Pi's) - but to avoid anyone thinkng the Pi's are spuriously radiating [We'll leave that to Liz herself]

If Dinorwic has to run at full tilt, we'll suspect someone confused mW and MW

Safe trip, it's a fair old step from Cambridge to near Pontypool (assuming it's where some of my previous devices were tested).

And yes I do know how to pronounce Ponypridd correctly

Have fun! Just spent a few days there myself, I do like a bit of Wales, bach - the food can be quite spectacular.  (And being a) half-Welsh and b) a biker I don't need a passport or to pay to get over the bridge )

You know, I'd be happy to come down and help out, fetch you coffee, do the lunch run, etc., in exchange for a Pi?

Good luck with the testing and have a safe drive. Looking forward to seeing some of the info when it's available. It's great to have such an in depth view of what goes in to bringing something like this to market.

Please make them big and detailed. Some of us on here have not only a morbid and intense curiosity, but also a practical use for them. It would be very useful to know exactly what frequencies and levels we can expect if one were to want to use a RaspPi alongside radio transceivers.

I hope that you both enjoy your day, and will have some interesting, and hopefully encouraging news to pass on to us upon your return.

How about a few more pictures?… even if they are only of the lovely Welsh countryside!

Good luck and I hope you enjoy yourselves.

On a side note I really, really appreciate all the little updates and snippets of information. I've never known a company/foundation quite in the same league.

PS hope you don't get stuck in any snow :-p

Hi cashaw

Fair point, Pontypridd .

My only excuse being that it had been a long day starting a new job .

As to pronouncing various Swedish town names, well I shall abandon hope now .

Best Regards

Bit late now, but in the future

You're not wrong there!

Can only guess it wasn't as plain sailing as everyone thought.

Thanks for that link Dave! I had seen it but the title didn't seem to suggest this was the place to be for official announcements.
