Re: proposing a name for R-PI expansion boards.

The arduino is famous for its "shields", the expansion cards that can be plugged into the main processor board. Not all of these boards will be placed on top top of the R-PI itself, (the gertboard is a good example), but many small ones will.

I propose that we also invent a name for such boards for the R-PI, maybe two names to distinguish  between a gertboard like board, and a shield like board.

I also have a proposal for the name of the shield like boards, many a pie has a "top cover" that is called the crust, so a natural name for a R-PI's "shield" would be "crust".

But perhaps someone can think of a better name?

For the larger gertboard like boards attached with a band-cable I don't have a name, but someone will probably invent one.

Would not 'leaves' be the obvious name?

Did you mean "leafs"?

Perhaps you could call an attached board a "branch"?

SEED

Sideways Expansion and Experiment Device

????

...or should that be

System Expansion and Experiment Device?

+1 from me, though possibly should be System Expansion and Experimentation Device?

@mole125  Experimentation is better I think.

I also thought of DRUPELET but after a bottle of Rioja and some sunshine (yes...sunshine in Sheffield) I'll have to leave the expansion of the acronym to someone else

I like SEED too. Especially as they can be the seed for a good idea. . .

No. "Leaves" is the British English plural of "leaf"

As for what to call larger "crusts" (my prefered name) - well, if they are bigger than the 'Pi, that is, they cover all over it and a bit more, then that would just have to be custard

some nice ideas here - I prefer SEED to crust

Surely a Raspberry seed is a Pip - and if someone wants an expansion of it as an ancronym, how about Pi Peripheral.

I've heard people toss around "Plates" "Toppings" and "Dishes"

Personally, I like Plates or Toppings.

I have to say SEED and it"s textual expansion make sense. The only thing I could expand LEAF into was Logic Expansion Accessory Fixture

Since the expansion board would be jammed on, I would naturally vote for:

"Raspberry Jam".

Well, a few pertinent facts:

Raspberries (or Rubus idaeus) have "drupelets", and each drupelet has a seed inside, so raspberries indeed have seeds, (not a singular "seed") and not like strawberries "pips" on the outside (or rather in-between) their drupelets.

The raspberry is a type of plant that has "basal shoots", that is, it can form a new plant by growing a shoot that roots at the end, and forms a new plant. Maybe "basal shoot" (AKA as "adventitious shoot" or "sucker") could be the basis for the name for the "rooted expansion boards". Although "sucker" might not be a very good name

I really like the name "crust", as synonymous to the arduino's "shields", (for the obvious reason that both protect the softer stuff below) but it proposes we pretend that "PI" stands for "PIE", I'm not sure that is really true, or that PI simply refers to the mathematical constant, or as some people claim is alluring to the Python language.

If you look at the R-PI logo its obvious that "what covers the Raspberry fruit" is indeed a pair of leaves.

How about:

"Slices" or "Slice of Pie" ?

Thumbs up for seed as well. First thing to pop into my brain.

Could use the overused terms  Blade or Axe.

Nah - it should be called a Raspberry JAM board - Just Another Module.

My +1 vote (if we have them) is for System Expansion and Experimentation Device.

These board will be SEEDing new ideas and developments, I've got one planned for a small desktop robot

Best regards,

Colin

+1 for leaf.

SEED is a nice idea, but the wrong shape and the wrong concept; it's an add-on, not a whole new beginning.

Raspberries don't have branches, they have canes, and a cane is the wrong shape again anyway.

Drupelet would be a nice one, if the Raspberry Pi Computer is seen as one component of a Raspberry Pi system. It's a nice educational point too.

But on the whole, I think Leaf has the edge.

Whipped cream?

I actually think that "crust" would be the most appropriate, but, for some reason, not the most attractive name.

**EDIT**

Somebody should make an expansion board called "a la mode".  That would be sweet!

I'm somewhat partial to "a La Mode"....

I can't help but think the crust refers to something like a case, rather than an expansion.

I take the point of this being an add-on rather than a new beginning but I can't see the drupelet (droopy) takes us any closer in "shape". We're chasing ourselves in to a hole if we don't keep it short and simple and I do think we have a number of inspired ideas.

It's worth considering how you might refer to the modules:

Data Logging Seed / Jam / Drupelet / leaf / slice / crust / a La Mode
Proto Seed / Jam / Drupelet / leaf / slice / crust / a La Mode
Motor Seed / Jam / Drupelet / leaf / slice / crust / a La Mode
GPS Seed / Jam / Drupelet / leaf / slice / crust / a La Mode

I guess this leads me back to thinking of this as seeding new ideas or expansion and I feel that seed fits better as a name.

Best regards,

Colin
