Re: Why no unboxings yet, when there are 10.000 Raspis produced?

Wed Mar 07, 2012 8:00 am

I dont't want to sound too negative, but: Why are none of the 10.000 raspis shipped to buyers yet (or at least it seems so, otherwise we would have seen unboxing videos on youtube)?

Do RS and Farnell stash them away in some warehouse, 5000 each?

I think that is basically a stupid idea.

Shipping these first 10.000 out to real people would really do something for the confidence that Raspberry Pi is actually in the production stage, and not i some kind of limbo.

/ralph -- I'm a bit frustrated, that even when *I* cannot yet get one, it seems nobody else has been able to.

They are in transit from China to the UK and wherever RS and Farnell have decided to ship them.

Ah .. I thought these 10.000 had arrived in the UK already. So these are on a container on the sea somewhere?

The last update about that notorious first 10k batch was this:

As you may have gathered, there’s been a delay at the factory; we’ve been assured this morning that a first batch of boards will ship to us either today or first thing Monday.
(source)

So they were ready for shipping from china at feb 25 or 27. I dont know if they were shipped to the uk or sent there by plane, but it will have to go through both the chinese and english customs and that can take a while.

They were going to be sent airfreight but are probably stuck in customs or export control somewhere.

The real reason is that the StarTrek transporter system required to get them from there to here in a ridiculously short period of time, hasn't been invented yet.

These postings pop up several times a day and then about 10 people have to post an explanation, partly because there is no definitive statement from RPF. Is it not possible to have an agree two line reply that an admin can just paste in and then close down the thread? Better still a two liner at the top of the forum or even on the home page in 100 point, bold red text.

There was a delay in getting them here (I'm not totally clear on the cause), but the first ones will be going out to customers next week from both vendors. (Yes, they do exist!)

We've got inspectors from both Element 14/Premier Farnell and RS going to the factory today to satisfy themselves about working conditions. We've already sent someone along on our own behalf (we were happy), and I think Broadcom are also sending an observer in at some point - not sure if that's on their behalf, ours, or just for fun! It's a small outfit, not at all on the same scale as something like Foxconn. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to identify them at the moment, but I will do when I'm certain I can.

I think to be fair to the OP, we were given the impression that the Pi's were coming off the line a couple of weeks ago and air freight is not that slow.

Fair do's that there are other things that need to be done, but, as others post, in the absence of facts, unfettered speculation will have to fill the void.

Why would they "stash" them away?!

My understanding is that people who managed to order one from the first batch of 10,000 have an expected delivery date of March 12th so don't expect to see any unboxing vids until then. I totally agree that we all need proof that this first batch actually exists though!

Thanks, Liz.

A thread or FAQ entry about the status/whereabouts of the first 10k batch would probably help, until it is really shipped out.

One interesting point from Liz's post is that RS and Farnell are sharing the same production line, at least for the early runs.

This kills the rumour that there might be a slight difference in the hardware.

Stop with all the facts! Rumours are much more fun.

And I was so looking forward to endless speculation over whether RS boards were superior to Farnell boards, or vice versa.

A competition for the most tedious, mind numbing video would be fun. As far as contenders go, the recent Guardian video is a good stating point. He said nothing of interest and over half the video was of him talking to camera. It fails as a contender in that it is in focus and he speaks clearly.

I think unboxing videos of the Raspi will probably be the most boring things imaginable. Except for the X-Factor. And Coronation Street. And some other really boring stuff.

It was bad enough having to sit through the prior advert without the option to skip, but the "look I have plugged in a Raspberry Pi" presentation was best viewed with the sound off anyway.

Rather than unboxing, perhaps we could have boxing videos where users create a case and place their Raspberry Pis inside them before starting?

They will also need a Stanley knife to pare off little bits of plastic when they discover that the ports don't quite match.

You're onto something there, though I think you've got the scale a tad wrong.  But I can see a video of a Pi in a shoebox, with excessive amounts of duct/gaffa tape and double-sided sticky pads as having plenty of possibilities.....
