Sorry if this has already been answered. I've downloaded the debian image for the pi and used dd to copy it to an sd card, but none of the seperate partitions seen to be visible in linux or windows is this normal or should I start from scratch again

In windows go to control panel/administrative tools/computer management/storage/disk management snapin and you should be able to see the partitions on the sdcard in there.

or in linux use Gparted or other partition app, or disk utility, and you should be able to see the partitions.

If it is good you should see a 75Mb/ a 1.55 Gb/ 191Mb/and then some unallocated space
If you are more worried about ,spelling, punctuation or grammar you have probably already missed the point so please just move on.
