Re: VirtualBox and SD card

Fri Feb 24, 2012 10:51 am

I have put the debian system downloaded from here onto a SD card.

Then used the 'VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -filename path\to\usb.vmdk -rawdisk \\.\PhysicalDrive1' command to create a vndk file pointing to the SD card.

When I try to use this in VirtualBox at the add hard disk option under IDE controller in storage settings I get this error

Failed to open the hard disk F:\Rasp Pi\VirtualBox\mystuff\usb.vmdk

The medium 'F:\Rasp Pi\VirtualBox\mystuff\usb.vmdk' can't be used as the requested device type.

Am I doing something wrong or is it not possible to use the SD card in this way?

No, you can't do it this way.

The first partition on the card is FAT but with ARM code, not X86 code.

There are a variety of postings on here about running the Debian6 image but you will have to run it through an emulator that allows you to run ARM code.

See Simulator & emulator downloads for download of a VirtualBox image that is setup to run an emulator - you will benefit from reading the linked posts for VirtualBox & the Official image and the whole of all three threads.

Thanks.

I have read those threads and found them fairly inpenetrable.

So I will wait for a true idiot guide or the real hardware.

Step by step should work.

First, click here to download the VirtualBox image. Let me know when that's done.
