Re: Raspi: short for Raspberry Pi

This has to happen sooner or later: Writing and saying Raspberry Pi will get hard. So, someone is going to shorten the name.

I wonder if "Raspi" will work:

*A quick web search doesn't reveal any conflicts or awkward meanings.

*Wiktionary (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/raspi) says "Raspi" is used in Finnish, Italian, and Spanish, but no awkward or unacceptable meanings.

What say you all?

In some local italian dialects, "raspa" may derogatorily refer to a sexual act.
Anyway, such an use is not widespread, and raspi could work.
To my ear it sounds a bit funny; however, this is not necessarily a bad thing.

I want to know what a grouping of them is called.

A patisserie?
A teachers nightmare?

Glad to see some endorsement. We should try using it outside this thread to see if it will gel.

Why not just rp, quick and easy, or maybe some form of RP, Like R-P or R?.

I think "Raspi" preserves the sense of the name "Raspberry Pi" and gives the device a warm name that, IMHO, RP doesn't.

"Raspi" can be pronounced: Raspea or Raspie depending on your accent and preference.

I've been using R.Pi as shorthand for both the Foundation and the device - a catchy name for the device is definately needed. BerryBoard? RaspberryBoard? R.PiBoard? I dunno.

I was proposing "Raspi" for the device. I think in most cases the name Raspberry Pi (and any shorthand) will be invoked to mean the device.

Why don't you let it form naturally and let it evolve from there as that is how names and languages are usually made and stick. Don't try and force the issue, just let it happen.

Well, I like Raspi - but as MDC says, these things tend to evolve of their own accord!

Okay first off, if anyone does use the R-Pi in a cluster I think it either needs to be called a druplet (druplets are the tiny bumps that make up a raspberry) or a bramble (which is actually a cluster of raspberries is called). Just a thought that makes me laugh.

Ohh, R.Pi Druplet, I quite like that. The Druplet.
Hmm....

Yeah, R-Pi sounds better and can be easily typed.

Raspi sounds like someone getting annoyed, or someone doing a nasty fart. It would get pronounced Raas-pee rather than raas-py.

Raspi may also sound a bit gutteral. R-Pi sounds a bit more friendly I think, if that's a criteria.

Raspi reminds me of Raspy, like your voice is Raspy :? I like R-Pi because the way I pronounce it it's Are-Pie :D
