Re: PimpMyPi : new Raspberry Pi website

Mon Jan 30, 2012 4:13 pm

Hello everyone,

For the past month, we at PimpMyPi have been slaving away designing, coding and populating a new Raspberry Pi community website.

The site will initially boast the usual set of features such as a members area and blog, however it will also launch with it's own Wiki, which I have personally been populating, but will be open to public editing. This Wiki is intended to compliment the already available Wiki at eLinux and we have no intention of competing. The Wiki used at PimpMyPi has been coded by me alone and is of a completely different style to the one at eLinux, it will also consist of not only information, but FAQ's, guides and other knowledge in one central Raspberry Pi dedicated resource.

We will hopefully be launching in the next few days but we would like to reach out to the community and ask, what would would you like to see on a Rasberry Pi community site? We have obviously done our best to address what we think, you, the community would like to see in addition to the wide range of resources already available, but I'm positive we haven't thought of anywhere near everything!

I am also developing a module in secret which I feel will address a very popular request. so keep your eyes peeled as we plan to launch it either on, or before the day of the Raspberry Pi launch!

We will keep you updated as and when there is news to be released, but in the mean time let us know what you would like and see and we can take it into consideration for adding at a later date.

Thanks for reading, and we look forward to seeing you on the site soon!

Jack & John,

PimpMyPi

At the risk of appearing sarcastic, I thought THIS was the Raspberry Pi community website.

It certainly is THE Raspberry Pi community website, but it is also the official site, where by features and extra website additions won't always fit with the brand and amount of time the website admins have to implement such requests.

As mentioned earlier, our site is aimed at complimenting the already available resources rather than attempting to gain a monopoly.

FedoraARM will be the shipped Operating System, but that doesn't mean ArchARM or Debian don't have anything to offer…

Cool Idea , i really look forward to it !
But is isn"t it a bit naive to advertise in the official forum ? Whenever I saw that happening it immediately led to bad karma on community forums .
[Insert random self-fullfilling prophecy here]
Am i trolling already :-O ?

Perhaps you could gain more enthusiasm from me if you could better articulate the key differences PimpMyPi would offer versus the existing community sites (org and com).  I'm not quite sure what PimpMyPi would offer that wouldn't naturally be provided through the RaspberryPi sites.

The RPi team have already built the blog/wiki/forum/shop infrastructure for the community to contribute content.  Wouldn't it be better for the PimpMyPi team to focus your energies on helping make the existing community site better rather than creating an alternative/complementary site?

The only time I see popular unofficial websites is where it springs up before the official one or the official one is poorly maintained, neither are true here.
What I did think when I saw the name (which I love) was it would be good at catching the attention of the youth, so perhaps a education driven section. You really do need something to differentiate yourself from official forum.

I don"t think competition is a bad think but you have a tricky market. Good luck.

I actually agree that it is time to split the audience. This forum is really starting to get overloaded and the original target of the foundation is starting to be swamped.

PimpMyPi seems to target the case modding community. This is one of the areas which I find very interesting, but i feel that the official RPi forum is not the appropriate place to post about this topic.

To build a proper market demand for the RPi, we will need more than just one website for owners to look at. I particularly like the frambozenbier.org website, which seems to be targeting the hardcore hackers.

I think it"s a brilliant idea and fair play to the guys for wanting to add there own little bit to what looks like an ever growing "scene" . I know I"m being sad but I honestly mean what I say, doesn"t it really feel like the beginning of what could be a revolution in computing? Grass roots, new, cheap, home brew computing for the masses run for the sheer love of it instead of money

One website with a single page (no content, just a twitter link) and a twitter account with one tweet (pointing back to the website) is hardly much to go on. If the 'Pi takes off as we all hope and expect, there will be plenty of similar sites starting up all over the web.

It's perhaps a little early to be criticising their enthusiasm, so lets wait until they launch properly

Personally, it probably wouldn't be my GOTO site, but if it helps spread the word, and helps different sectors of users, then all power to the 'Pi!

As for the "secret" module – well that is intriguing.  My guess is a downloadable, printable card 'Pi case, for members to "cut out and keep".

Reminds me of the cut out Bros coffee mug that was in Viz a very long time ago.

That's my thought exactly, when the RPi is released and sells as well as we hope it will, there is no way everything will be contained to one site.  Chances are there will be various specialist sites each with their own aims, views and ideas.  Even if the RPi ended up being for education only, it would be likely schools and universities would each build their own areas.

The reach of the RPi is so broad, I think there will be many many groups around, hopefully they will at least try to link with each other, so the same things can be done once and effort can be used to build on each other's work.

If you write anything good, or find anything, then hopefully it can be linked in the wiki etc for everyone to find.

Good luck with the site!  Keep us up to date.

I noticed on that website that they have a Pimp-My-Pi section, I apologise as I haven't seen that site before, I can promise that we came up with PimpMyPi separately!

Back on track, thank you to everyone for the support and we have also taken the criticism on board. As for the secret module, I should have explained this a bit better, so here goes;

The site is based on a Content Management System that I am developing myself, it consists of a base module which is essentially a basic website which can have multiple pages. Now, I have put in a system where by the website supports Modules (you could also call them plugins), so currently I have set up the members module, wiki module and blog module. I have another module in development which I hope to have finished by the time the Raspberry Pi is released. As the information it will contain cannot be created until the RPi is in mine and others hands!

The site will be very similar to already existing sites until the RPi is released where it will then start to expand as I add extra features and keep an eye on what I feel the community is asking for and try to fulfil it.

The reason for the site is to cater to my love for web design, programming and embedded systems – which can in this instance be all rolled into one project! I am doing some proof reading and further Wiki edits today in the hope of possibly being ready for Thursday, as I am out on a course Wednesday and would not have time to address issues if I opened it today/tomorrow!

Again, thank you for the feedback and I hope the site can live up to your (in some cases thankfully low ) expectations!

Cheers,

Jack.

Just a quick post to say that we have launched this evening! There isn't massive amounts of content on the site yet but I hope to change that over the weekend.

Thanks to the team for creating a fantastic project and I can't wait get my hands on one and start doing some interesting coding!!

Just a quick heads up to say that the website addition I have been coding for the past couple of weeks is now available. There is a blog post explaining what it is and does which I've quoted below.

Yesterday was the unveiling of the downloads section. A place where the Raspberry Pi community can share custom distributions that they have created for the whole world to use.

It is based around bittorrent so to download custom distributions you would have to use a bittorrent client.

The idea for the downloads section is to give people a voice and a place to distibute thier creations. This section is not only limited to brand spanking new, all bells and whistles distribtuions but caters to standard distributions with custom programs set up in a sane way for those without the time to learn and do it themselves.

For example, I would love to see a Debian 6 with web server set up and Fedora as fileserver, even Archlinux as an XBMC box! These are distos that the community can alter and redistribute with no particular expertise in Linux but with a passion and knowledge around a subset of programs.

I'm looking forward to contibuting myself when I can finally get my hands on a Raspberry Pi!

I can say we're excited for the launch and hope we will manage to get some action in the initial batch!
