And H.265 only. H.264 is limited to 2K.

On Raspbian: Kodi
Minimal Kiosk Browser (kweb)
Slim, fast webkit browser with support for audio+video+playlists+youtube+pdf+download
Optional fullscreen kiosk mode and command interface for embedded applications
Includes omxplayerGUI, an X front end for omxplayer

I know kodi or libreelec could be used but is there any support for buster to play 4K video x264 or x265? In future is there any plan for it?

Kodi is an application. It runs on Buster, and should be able to play 4K H.265 video. 4K H.264 is not possible, as the hardware can't do it.

I'd like a commandline H.265 player like omxplayer, but I've no idea if one is in the works.

We have VLC supporting 4K H.265 when running fullscreen both from the command line and from X.
I'm not sure if the updated version is out yet, but it should be imminent.

Over the weekend, I attempted to build popcornmix's ffmpeg fork and link it against mplayer, but it didn't work. Clearly no acceleration was going on, and the output was interestingly corrupt on the screen.

(Edit:) I should probably add that this wasn't much of a surprise. If it was that easy, someone would have done it by now.

We've had a guy spend several weeks on this.

The problem is that video decode is not the only bottleneck.
If you hw decode the video and then software resize, convert YUV->RGB and blend in subtitles/osd you'll still find HD videos still don't play well.
The solution needs hw support for the decode, resize, convert and blend.

And the path taken is different when running VLC from console or desktop.
It's different when running fullscreen or windowed.
It's different when running with legacy GL driver and fkms.

So it wasn't a simple job.

Imminent? It isn't in the repository yet.

Personally I am disappointed for the moment performance in reading 4K videos on the Pi 4 (Libreelec and Raspbian) I expected better on that side.

I get better results with TV box under Amlogic S905X2 for example.

Do you think that will improve a lot on that side?

Thank you

Code: Select all

vlc is already the newest version (3.0.8-0+deb10u1+rpt1).
and have had for some months.

We spotted a couple of issues in testing before planned release last week.
4K hevc playback in a window was not showing video, which we now have a fix for.
There is a memory leak on seeking that is being investigated.

I have tried 4k video playback from both VLC command line and from X, both failed. Did I miss anything?
My VLC version 3.0.8

Thanks
