Can't install Noobs from an 8gb SD?

Tue Aug 27, 2019 10:10 am

Hi,

I've not come across this before (and I've had to re-install a few times over the years) but when I try to boot up a Pi zero for the first time with an 8gb card, it's telling me that it doesn't have enough space for Raspbian.

I copied the Noobs download onto the card, this took up just over 2.5gb.

I put the card in and get the Noobs screen but it's says that Raspbian needs 5623mb and I've only got 5280mb - this has never happened before so I'm a bit confused.

I did a full clean of the card before I copied Noobs over - is there anything I can leave out of Noobs to free up some space?

Forget NOOBS and install an OS image.

If you need noobs, use noobs-lite as it doesn't contain 2gb of compressed installation files. But you'd still need a bigger SD card to install multiple OSes.

Yep. NOOBS 3.2.0 is only *23 MB* too big to put on an 8G SD.

I tried untar-ing the zip file, removing LibreELEC, and re-zipping. This resulted in a SD that had a few dozen MB to spare, but the SD was unbootable.

You can get 3.1.1 from the archives, or you can use NOOBs Lite.
