The things I've gotten to work on my PI 4 :)

Fri Aug 23, 2019 8:05 pm

So far, these are the things I've gotten to work well on my Pi 4...

Amazon prime video
Netflix
ABCMouse.com
Gmail
Youtube fullscreen :)
Slack through the web interface
Discord through the web interface
Wolfenstein Enemy Territory Legacy
Quake 3
Open Arena
Intellij Community Edition (Primarily doing Kotlin development)
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (Tiles Version) (super important :) )

These are all capabilities that I never got running on my PI3, (or that the performance was degraded enough as to not be worth it).

In particular Inteliij wouldn't even load on a pi3. And while it is a little slow on the pi4, it works and is stable and is usable :)

I'm super excited about the accelerated 3d. I've been testing out as much as I can with that, and so far I've been very impressed. It's a far cry from the stability the old experimental drivers exhibited.

Thanks for all the hard work.

My daughter and I are both using the pi4 as our main computing platform, and so far I'm pretty happy with it :)

I just tried Dungeon Crawl (w/ Tiles) for the first time yesterday. It's pretty good. Use Mummy Necromancer if you're lazy.

I think I tried Open Arena but got a garbage frame rate. Maybe I'll try it again but it's not my thing.

You should try Kodi. It doesn't seem as smooth as it is on LibreELEC, but it is convenient to have it available on Raspbian.

DOSBox package fails to install for some reason.

You need to set the the renderer to opengl1. See that OpenArena thread.

There are still problems like mirrors/portals rendering incorrectly but you should easily get 60+ fps.

0AD - needs a 2GB+ PI4
OpenSCAD, Warzone2100, both on Gentoo64.

Yep the Pi4 is pretty usable now :D
Stuff that does not work on Buster yet, I can get working on Gentoo64
They can take much longer to build but they are now A72 optimised.

The software will only get better as things get updated/fixed for Pi4's.
My only worry is once all these hings are working I will be spending too much time playing games instead of making and coding?

Awesome, congrats on setting up your Pi4. Your list sounds nice.

On mine I have a stable running solution for:

Firefox-ESR (including firefox accounts synching)
Pidgin (chat)
discord
deluge
remapped some keys for Mac Wireless Keyboard
Dual audio output (1x hdmi, 1x external sound card usb)
Flightaware tracking
youtube is 100% smooth, including 60fps on the 1080p videos I have seen. how excellent!
Several mail accounts via thunderbird and claws mail

SSD boot via USB 3 also works, albeit not as as fast I wanted it to be (it is a very old SSD and not worth it as a boot drive, IMO). Also, even though SSD booting is faster, the actual OS is not that much faster for me. I would have to buy a better SSD, this one is 7-8 years old and was used heavily on Mac OS.

The only thing I am missing on Linux generally is a good app for 1Password with a GUI. The CLI one works though.

Nice stuff guys!

For me (next to mac keys):

VS Code,
PyCharm/Idea (Python/Java development)
Dosbox (with some real oldies) - including Prince, C&C and Warcraft II
Processing
SQuirreL (DB access)
Thunderbird
along with KDE stuff like Kate, Dolphin, etc...

I've used Gimp a bit and it is completely usable with 4k screen shots (cut, amend, compose a few layers with transparency, etc)

there are some blog posts that outline the process in detail, but the long and short is that you grab the widevine library from a chromos image copy it into

/usr/lib/chromium-browser/libwidevinecdm.so

then go get a plugin that allows you to change the user-agent string your browser reports and voila, you are up and running.

be aware that doing an os upgrade deleted this file from my install and I had to copy it back in, but that wasn't a big deal.

hope this helps.
