If you buy from an authorized reseller, the price is the list price ($35, $35, $55) converted to local currency plus local taxes.

Rule of supply and demand tops out when folk refuse to buy.

I’ve seen things be put up for 10-12 times value and not be sold - best one was a wargames figure that was £200 but still available from the manufacturers at £15 - poor seller answered my ‘is this the same figure’ by posting the affirmative answer on the listing!

Fun thing I found was that a few weeks ago this was a dream and now a hot item  Such is ‘need’ vs ‘want’...

People are willing to buy it even at vastly inflated prices. They've sold 3 different bundles if you look at their sold history. The "cheapest" is a RPi 4 4GB and official PSU for $139.99. They're not hiding the fact they're inflating the price on that auction as it still has the $55 price label on the box.

Blame VAT for that. £45 + 20% VAT = £54

This is why sellers do this. Desperate buyers who are dumb enough to support the scalpers. There were even some sellers on Amazon trying to pull that crap ($200 for a Pi4 alone). Just say no!
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

But they could be fake - place order, pay, refund.

Seen many a fake remcster do this with figures till eBay catches on

Have to agree with HawaiianPi - just say no and the price will come down. If you’re that desperate to get rid of the money then send it to charity.

And I thik everyone here can think of the perfect charity to send it to...

Really...the solution to scalpers selling Pis at inflated prices....wait a few weeks for supply to catch up with demand. While you're waiting for that, look at a variety of authorized resellers to see who has the model you want available.

As far as I can tell, no business carries any version of RPi anywhere near where I live. So, the pricing would depend on whatever online seller may or may not have it available at any given time.

I got my 3B+ (the only RPi I own) from someone selling it via newegg.com at the time, and it cost me $35 with free shipping. I guess I just lucked out because a week later the seller raised the price.

This isn't actually correct, the authorised resellers are not bound to the $35, $45, $55 pricing. Local authorised resellers here are charging a premium (which they were not charging at launch) and no, it isn't a tax.

Regarding inflated eBay prices, eBay charges fees, your bank charges fees, you get taxed on the sale and you have to pay postage / cost of sending it. It's no wonder people charge higher prices.

I'd avoid newegg, they sell new AND refurbished items, but they don't tell you that openly. You may have bought a second hand Pi3b+ for $35
