Servers Power Consumption

Wed Jul 31, 2019 8:07 am

Curious folks,

If a server is installed is it consuming any power when idle or is it mainly just when serving services?

I'm guessing when idle power consumption is probably extremely low but increases under load.

Reason for enquiry is basically CPU temperature, seems very important with Pi4 and am wondering if installation of numerous servers drives up CPU usage even though likelihood is only one server will be used at a time.

if it is not serving anything i.e. no active connections then it wont ramp up cpu usage.
if you want a case to keep it cool then https://geekworm.com/products/raspberry ... tive-shell or
https://flirc.tv/more/raspberry-pi-4-case
will work fine
or
https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/fan-shim
with no case

unless you are stressing it hard then CPU temps are not high in the offical case [if you are using a server and not running a desktop then things will be cooler anyway

anything you install to run as a service will by definition will require some processing power to start and set up, what it does while not responding to requests may or may not require additional time/power to execute depending on just what it is. A home automation server will no doubt gather and record metrics on temperatures and humidity etc regardless of any user interaction for example.

Lower but not "extremely low".

There are some numbers at https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... /#pi-power

Actually it depends.. I have seen a Raspberry 4B be powered with as low as 5.1V 1000mA. and a bit lesser if you underclock it. With that said. If you thinking about using more than one USB stick connected and if you intend to draw some CPU power as well from it you need at least 2,5A and beyond

Im currently using my 5v 2.4A and it woks just fine
