Your problem is related to Raspian Buster having been offically released before Debian Buster.
It will no doubt go away when the next Raspbian image is released in a month or two.

Till then, start with sudo apt -y update

Is no one able to use "search" to find the previous threads about this that contain the correct solution ?

I beg to differ, it solves the problem.

Doesn't look like it. It appears to be an alternative solution.

Looking here https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 1&t=245022 appears to suggest you can use either

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update --allow-releaseinfo-change
or

Code: Select all

sudo apt update -y

Look at the man pages for apt-get.

Using "-y" just hides the issue. Do you know there are no other questions asked that you might want to answer "no" ?

"--allow-releaseinfo-change" addresses this specific issue and is there to be used in this specific case.

Both may work, but only one is the right answer.

PeterO

OH..... HOLD ON .....
You're using apt not apt-get... Why complicate the issue by using a different tool when there is an option designed specifically to deal with this situation in apt-get ? OP asked about problem with apt-get, so solution is to use the correct options, not ot use a different tool !

Fair enough.

I usually use apt-get so I used

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update --allow-releaseinfo-change
to sort out that problem. Just happened to see someone in the other post say they fixed it when using

Code: Select all

sudo apt update -y
.

If

Code: Select all

sudo apt update -y
is just a temp way around the issue then sorry.

I don't think there's any need to apologise. Some folk just appear to be a little "crusty" on here ;-)

You are completely right PeterO.

I tried both suggested work-arounds and they both allow successful update and upgrade. I don't believe that any other questions were put and automatically accepted by apt -y.

I have not done extensive reading to find out possible side effects of either command. I did see in the forum the phrase "you only need to do it once" regarding sudo apt-get --allow-releaseinfo-change" which made me think it might lead to a problem in future. My instinct though says a flag like that will only have an effect on the current command line rather than a lasting change.

So that minor worry, combined with the fact that sudo apt -y is easier to type and apt seems to be widely preferred over apt-get led me to suggest the shorter solution.

Apologies if that annoyed you.

The RIGHT solution: the Raspbian image should be updated asap.

Edit - fixed cell phone autocorrect!

You only need to do it once because it is the correct action to take and is designed to deal with precisely this situation. Any other "work around" may work in the short term but might lead to a problem in the future !

Guys,

Can I confirm, after I

Code: Select all

sudo apt update -y
I should immediately

Code: Select all

sudo apt upgrade -y

This is what the Raspberry Pi organisation say in their own documentation: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... pdating.md

What lies behind your question? In what timeframe is 'immediately'?

At the risk of further muddying the waters, does this work?

Code: Select all

sudo apt update --allow-releaseinfo-change
AIUI apt is intended for interactive (command -line) use, while apt-get is retained for batch file use (backwards compatibility).
While the differences are minor and may not be significant, on this forum we should try to encourage the most appropriate command, in case there is further divergence in the future.

Thank you all for all your responses I will try to do :

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update --allow-releaseinfo-change
and then :

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get upgrade
if this doesn't solves I will try :

Code: Select all

sudo apt -y update
then :

Code: Select all

sudo apt -y upgrade
