The subtitle and on screen display of omxplayer use the openvg library which is only present on the older Pi models. The on screen display has been disabled for pi4, but it sounds like subtitles still try to render using it. I haven't got a Pi to hand to check, but there should be an option to disabled the subtitles, and that should then work.

Are you using the legacy driver or one of the KMS drivers?
Minimal Kiosk Browser (kweb)
Slim, fast webkit browser with support for audio+video+playlists+youtube+pdf+download
Optional fullscreen kiosk mode and command interface for embedded applications
Includes omxplayerGUI, an X front end for omxplayer

Pi 0-3 should be identical. You'll need to provide any error logs if you want help.
And the default for pi 0-3 is still the legacy driver, not fkms.

Omxplayer won't run on Raspbian 10-Buster when you use the fkms or kms driver, i.e. when your /boot/config.txt file has in it this line:
dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
or
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d
Remove it and omxplayer works again.

VLC is running nicely on the Pi with HW acceleration in window and fullscreen mode, and is also compatible with an enabled (f)ksm driver.

It should, but there's a minor bug in detecting the fkms or kms overlay. I've raised an issue - https://github.com/popcornmix/omxplayer/issues/720
Add "--no-osd" to the command line and it'll run fine.

Ah, this explains it.
Thanks for the "--no-osd" info and for the bug-report!

Oh nooo.... Does that mean will never work with subtitles ever again?

I just got my Raspberry Pi4 and been so happy with the extra performance n RAM. Pretty much my only gripe is I can't make Omxplayer work with subtitles, as I used to be able to with older Pi's (last one the Pi3 Model B+).

I've tried to experiment briefly with VLC and have been sort of able to make it work the way I want to. I control my Pi via SSH ans so far what I've found:
- can start the VLC to play on screen just like OMXPlayer with command: cvlc. It will start full screen just like OMXPlayer when invoked this way throuvh my SSH termknal
- I can use --mmal-layer [digit] to control layering (similar to --layer in OMXPlayer, and can be used to work with OMXPlayer!)
- I can use --sub-file [filename] to load subtitle file
- I can use --start-time [digit in seconds] to start at certain time
- I can use --gain [digit] to gain volume (similar to --vol in omxplayer)

The problem I'm still having with VLC (or cvlc):
- I can't control the playback with keyboard thru the SSH terminal like I can use "q" to stop video, and "space" to pause for example
- I can't start video at a certain position on the screen like I can with omxplayer through the --win 0,0,480,576 for example.
- I haven't found out how to do cropping yet, this may be possible

Any feedback or help would be much appreciated! :)

Thanks for the link, gkreidl!

Wow, so the "-I ncurses" tag does give me some control over the playback with cvlc.

I guess the only thing left is to be able to control where the video will be placed on the screen, something that I can do with --win tag in omxplayer.

Also with cvlc, the command does not end when the video finishes playing, which makes it tricky to incorporate into a bash script like a while loop.

As always, any feedback would be appreciated :)

I'm in a simlar situation as you, or even worse.
I've published a complete RPi solution for users of onlinetrecorder.com (OTR) for decoding, converting and cutting videos (TV recordings). You'll find it in der German section of this forum (rpiotrtool), because 95% of all OTR users are Germans.

It makes heavy use of omxplayer (and my omxplayerGUI). Subtitles are important for preview of cuts and checking cuts after cutting a video. I also thought of using VLC instead (I need DBUS control!), but unfortunately VLC stutters when playing the original AVI video files (the final files in MKV format are played well). rpiotrtool would really profit from the RPi 4 USB3 HDD speed, but without OSD in omxplayer it's not usable.

Okay, so I've been using cvlc now with --play-and-quit tag, so I can use it in a while loop. I usually makd a playlist and use a while loop to play it, what I used to do with Omxplayer. Why I don't just play the playlist is because each video has a sub file that is not always coherent at the same folder with the same filename. That part is now working. The only part that I can't get to work is to get cvlc to play in certain positions of the screen like what --win used to be able to do. Any input, like always, is appreciated.
