VM to SD Card restore

Sat Jul 06, 2019 10:55 am

Hi guys,

New to the forum but been using its useful information for ages. I have been running various Pi home servers for a while now so thought it time to sign up.

Sincerest apologies if this query has been answered a billion times but I found nothing definitive in my trawling of the internet.

I am looking to use an emulator/VM style setup to test some concept installs of different applications using Raspbian and wondered if anyone had ever restored the virtual images to actual Pi hardware successfully? Will be looking to restore on both 3/4 hardware.

Thanks in advance.

I use chroot to make changes on my PC and can then convert it into an image which works on the Pi.

Suggest you take a look at pi-gen which is the official tool used to produce the images for the Pi. It also uses chroot to make changes to the filesystem. It may be overkill for what you want but it shows a few different elements involved in image production and modification.
