PI2 with USB boot or PI4 without still it will have it

Sun Jun 30, 2019 9:24 am

Hello,

My PI2 with SDcard just went away again wih the HASSIO, because of the CARD. After 6 month or somoething.
I decided to buy a a RP3, but that day the RP4 was released. I bought one.

Today I realized the USB boot wont work with it. And now my house automation is not working.

So what is your suggestion, go with RP2 with SSD or RP4 with SDCard till we will have the USB boot on it? Do you have any idea about the time to release it?

Thanks!

The RPi 4B not support USB booting is a known and well discussed, but no time frame.

Regards the Raspberry Pi 2B there are 2 variants, only the BCM2837 variant supports USB Boot.

If it is urgent to have USB Boot buy a RPi 3B+

+1 as, since it is "already enabled", it's quite simple to clone** a working, uSDHC card-based system to a USB-based device one (and then you can use the card slot to check "unknown" uSDHC card info:

** via Raspbian's built-in SD Card Copier
Trev.
Still running Raspbian Jessie on some older Pi's (an A, B1, B2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W) but Stretch on my 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, A+ and a B2. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

Also, note that the RPi3B/B+ can boot from a USB pendrive, more reliable than mSDHC cards, generally, if a little bit slower. 8-)

keep /boot on SD-Card and the rest on SSD until full boot from USB is supported? Then you don't need a new RPi...
