Pi 3 Model B+ locks up daily

Wed Sep 19, 2018 6:47 pm

I have a Pi that has an aluminum heat sink and in an AC office on a battery backup (Intel NUC has no issues + stays booted, TV stays on). It locks up multiple times per week. I can't seem to find a reason for the issue.

Running Raspbian GNU/Linux 9 created by the NOOBS launcher.

Got the info from /proc/cpuinfo
Hardware : BCM2835
Revision : a020d3
Serial : 000000007a356f50
https://elinux.org/RPi_HardwareHistory suggests it's the latest model of the 3

I know it locked up between last night and this afternoon and all I see in /var/log/syslog:
Sep 18 13:17:22 nocscreen dhcpcd[353]: wlan0: adding default route via 10.10.10.1
Sep 18 13:17:29 nocscreen dhcpcd[353]: wlan0: no IPv6 Routers available
Sep 19 14:30:38 nocscreen systemd[516]: Time has been changed
Sep 19 14:30:39 nocscreen systemd[1]: Time has been changed

Are there any possibilities to look for besides hardware failure? I didn't want to go out and buy a new Pi until ruling out software issues.

That log doesn't tell much, for sure.

Does this Pi do anything special? Is there enough free space on the SD? What type of PSU are you using?

iam8up,

I'm sorry but I don't understand what you mean there.

How is your Pi powered exactly?

I have known backup power systems that are terrible for computers and other electronics.

It says wlan reconfigured, so might be some external radio interferences happened.

Could you try a wired connection?

I think AC means air-conditioned. It appears the battery backup is powering a television, an Intel NUC as well as the Raspberry Pi.

I had similar issues with a the original 3B, which were solved by under clocking it to 900MHz. Since the 3B+ is different, I would recommend first using vcgencmd to make sure under voltage conditions are not happening with the power supply and power supply USB cable instead. If the problem persists, try under clocking to 1200 Mhz or even 900.

Correct, AC I meant air conditioned. To rule out high temperature problems causing lock up/down clock/etc.

The power supply was included in this kit (specifically with the expectation it was a known good PSU) - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BCC8PK7/re ... 0_TE_dp_i1

pi@nocscreen:~ $ free -m
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 927 435 84 143 407 364
Swap: 99 5 94

pi@nocscreen:~ $ vcgencmd -h
error=1 error_msg="Command not registered"
pi@nocscreen:~ $ which vcgencmd
/usr/bin/vcgencmd
pi@nocscreen:~ $ man vcgencmd
No manual entry for vcgencmd
See 'man 7 undocumented' for help when manual pages are not available.
pi@nocscreen:~ $ vcgencmd measure_volts
volt=1.3875V

From what I see the suggestions are voltage, underclocking, and wired networking. I'm going to start by changing the power to come from the TV USB port (then move forward).

Thanks for the notes you guys!

Could well be a power problem — either supply or cable. Check with

Code: Select all

vcgencmd get_throttled

I would be dubious about a TV USB port supplying enough current to run a Pi3B+.

Actually the TV is powering it just fine (it's unlabeled but since it's been going 12-18 hours and full clock speed often I'd guess it's a 1 amp).

I did notice a couple days ago I got this icon: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... _80_85.png
https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... g-icons.md

I'm surprised at stock clock AND a heatsink it's overheating. I'm also confused that it isn't just dropping the clock speed to continue running.

I'll continue to use the TV USB port for power and of course any additional thoughts/ideas/things to check are welcome!

Since the power source you are using causes low voltage, overheating and lockups, I would suggest configuring the built-in watchdog timer to reboot the system when it crashes.

Forcing an under clock to 600MHz and disabling all but one core as well as turning off the WiFi, HDMI and USB circuits will save power and also help.

It's been up for 5 days so it appears the included power supply was bad (hopefully not universally insufficient).

The TV (some cheapo Westinghouse) is providing power with a USB cable and seems to running perfect!

Certainly resolved, thanks for the discussion. All I had to do was change power sources.

10:43:45 up 8 days, 22:05, 3 users, load average: 1.03, 1.06, 1.08 (I guess 4 Chrome tabs is a lot of load for a Pi)
