New firmware for the official wireless dongle

Mon Jul 16, 2018 9:51 am

We have a new beta release of wireless dongle firmware. This is for anyone using this dongle https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/ra ... fi-dongle/

This file linked below needs to be copied to the /lib/firmware/brcm folder. You may wish to backup the existing file of the same name just in case.

This is the latest firmware build from Cypress, (compared with the current release which is 2014). It has a number of security and bug fixes - I am not sure exactly what though.

I'm asking for any reports back, good or bad. If we find no regressions, we will incorporate this in to our main Raspbian release.

Might be worth fixing those two links!

It'll go round 13 of my 15 raspberries when I do the next round of reboots (some of them use BRCM dongles/on-board WiFi).

Does it also apply to the "Y" one combined with a 2-port hub: http://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi ... pters.html ?

Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, B2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, A+ and a B2) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

Unfortunately no luck on this end. I'm using a brand new e14 Pi 3B+, and the official WiFi dongle:

Code: Select all

This is the same error as with the original firmware. `iwlist` returns no access points. This does not appear to be a signal issue, as I've tried with a router right next to it, and have no problems when using the dongle on a separate Pi3.

Oddly enough, the very first time I flashed Raspbian to the the 3B+, I booted with the dongle in. It scanned once, then after that it never scanned again. However it continues to scan fine in the Pi3.

Any ideas where I should go from here?

Wow. I needed to run `iwlist` as `sudo`. I don't feel like I've ever needed to do this before.

I tried this because I was getting poor speeds with the official dongle shown, while the new firmware was no worse than the old it certainly was no better.

Speeds are fixed briefly with ifdown wlan0 ifup wlan0 but the soon degenerate again.

This is the tread that lead me to here...

What sort of speeds are you seeing on boot, then as it deteriorates? How long does it take to slow down? Any messages in dmesg?

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me.

It turns out it was an unrelated network issue, I was a bit thrown as I was seeing poor speeds regardless of what access point I used, however the access points were fed from the same source that was on the fritz.

I have been running the new firmware 24x7 since Thurs and have not noticed any issues in performance or stability, the Pi in question runs my VPN & FlightRader feed, my stats show 100% availability during this period...

This still pops up from time to time, I think the consensus is though its a cosmetic thing -
brcmf_inetaddr_changed: fail to get arp ip table err:-23

I have also seen a couple of these, but as I said I've not seen any speed or stability issues to go with them. I cant remember seeing these issues with the old firmware, that is circumstantial though...
brcmf_run_escan: error (-25)
brcmfmac: brcmf_cfg80211_scan: scan error (-25)

Again sorry for the red herring...

Me.
