Raspberry Pi zero w Chromium problem

Mon Jun 25, 2018 4:20 pm

I just bought a new Pi zero w and loaded Raspbian using the noobs install. The wifi is connected and seems to be working fine. I updated and upgraded the system as instructed. My problems is when trying to open the Chromium browser it, will not run.
The hourglass comes on for a few seconds and then just goes away. I tried it several times and rebooted etc. This is a genuine Raspberry pi product as I bought it from one of your recommended dealers.

Open a terminal and type:

Code: Select all

chromium-browser
If the browser does not start, you will see some type of error message.

From the discussion, this problem is way to deep for me. What browser would be the most likely to work on my new Pi Zero W ?

If your havent installed a lot of apps/packages requiring detailed setups on your new RPiZW then I suggest

1. re-flashing the microSD card with the latest Raspbian Stretch with Desktop image
2. I recommend not using NOOBS/PINN, use Etcher to flash image (or Apple Pi Baker for Mac) to microSD
3. after flashing, run update and upgrade. DONT/NEVER USE dist-upgrade on your RPiZW (for now)

the chromium version should remain at:
Version 60.0.3112.89 (Developer Build) Built on Ubuntu 14.04, running on Raspbian 9.1 (32-bit)
and you should be able to use it

lets wait awhile until a new and reliable fix is available....

I'd be interested in seeing your reasons for avoiding dist-upgrade.

And I would add a 4th step...run "apt-get clean".

As it turned out the problem was rpi-chromium-mods version 20180605 which was only installed via dist-upgrade.

A fixed version is now available, and will come in via a standard upgrade :

Code: Select all

 sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
Android app - Raspi Card Imager - download and image SD cards - No PC required !

Standard upgrade is dist-upgrade ;-)

Plain 'upgrade' is for advanced use, not the one to use if you want things to 'just work'.

well apparently a fix was issued

I tried it this morning (before going to work)

it worked!

I can use Chromium again on my RPiZW (well all Broadcom BCM2835 RPis).

just do sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade to get the fix

I am pleased, the update fixed the browser problem. This issue is solved for me.
