USB car to Raspberry pi

Wed May 09, 2018 12:29 pm

Hi,

I'm thinking to buy a 12v acid batttery to supply my pi 3b and my external circuit that runs 2 h-bridges (l298n) and 4 DC motors...

Can I use USB Car Charger 2 Port Adapter Cigarette Socket (plugin its + on my 12 v battery positive input and its - on my battery negative input) will it work to supply my pi 3b and its usb ports?

And Can I use 2 (One for Pi and another for another 5v output) ? I mean Duplicating the process above, using another wires and another usb car charger, Will it send 5v to both 5v output?

I know that there are many boards that make 12v to 5v...but I want to use usb car charger because it's cheap and the output is usb port!

Thanks in advance!

As a minimum, you should check what the current limit on the car adapter is, and also make sure the adapter contains a fuse.

I wouldn't use a 12v car battery myself, although a smaller 12v battery such as the type used by mobility scooters or golf carts would be roughly the same. Somewhere I do have 2 12v to 5v wire-in adapters to each provide two 5v supplies.

No, I can't think of anything funny that won't offend someone if they want it to...

I'm thinking to use a battery: 12v 4.5ah Unipower

Not a real car battery.

Can I use it?

Thanks!

You can use salted lasagne covered with aluminium foil if you want.
You just need to make sure the Pi gets a regulated 5.0 to 5.25v DC capable of around 2 to 2.5 or more amps.
