Looking for 64 bit OS Raspberry Pi 3 b+

Mon Mar 19, 2018 12:41 pm

Did anyone find a updated 64 Bit OS that works with the new Raspberry Pi 3 b+?
The OS supported by the 3b are not right away supported by the 3 b+ and need a boot up update.
Also, lets skip the "Why do you want 64bit, there is no difference with the 32bit" discussion that i see on every single post regarding 64 bit OS.

If you know one, could you please post a link to it here.

It's early days yet. I have not heard of a 3B+ ready 64 bit OS yet. I'm sure they will come.

Raspbian was updated on the 13th to be compatible with the 3B+.

I think it is just different boot files, may be worth your while checking.

Here's an idea, you want a feature that is not currently available, yes?

Why not contribute?

Why so harsh? I imagine there have been arguments on this forum before about 32-bit vs 64-bit, but I see no harm in someone trying to make a list of 64-bit OS's for the Pi 3B+.

@OP: It's just a matter of time before the 64-bit OS's that support the Pi 3B update their bootcode to support the 3B+. They will probably have it in their next release (or the one after that), so you might be interested looking at their release cycle to get an estimate of when that will be. Feel free to let us know what you find out ;)

+1
Probably the normal 64-bit OS's that are available for the RPI 3B, will become available for the 3B+ soon, OS's like SUSE.
Just give them some time to update their boot code etc.

What's harsh? The OP wants a feature that isn't currently available in open source software, as you say he could wait or as I say he could contribute towards that feature.

EDIT: I'm still of the belief that a 64bit OS is of no good to any PC with only 1GB memory other that contributing to the bane of my life which is bloatware.

Sure, I also recommend everyone to contribute in whatever way they can. But when someone wants to compile a list of OS's that have certain compatibility, your reply is basically "make it compatible yourself". That's not very helpful. You can have your beliefs, but at the same time you're derailing this topic.

@OP: you could try backing this issue concerning pi64: https://github.com/bamarni/pi64/issues/75 (leaving a comment that you would also like to see an update to support the Raspberry Pi 3B+)

EDIT: Also, according to this topic (viewtopic.php?t=208220) you can get Arch Linux ARM to work on a Pi 3B+ already. If I'm not mistaken that's 64 bit.

Many apologies to you and especially the OP, I'm getting a little cynical in my old age and misread the original post. Certainly there is no harm in asking and as others have posted give it time the 3b+ is less than a week since release.

https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/eben-q-a-1/
to quote
Raspbian is effectively 32-bit Debian built for the ARMv6 instruction-set architecture supported by the ARM11 processor in the first-generation Raspberry Pi. So maybe the question should be: “Would we release a version of our operating environment that was built on top of 64-bit ARM Debian?”

And the answer is: “Not yet.”

FYI, I maintain a Gentoo 64-bit image that boots on the RPi3 B and B+:

https://github.com/sakaki-/gentoo-on-rpi3-64bit

(Full download and usage instructions on the above page)

Boots straight to an Xfce4 desktop, supports WiFi, Bluetooth, sound, VC4 GL rendering.
Comes complete with a reasonable set of pre-compiled apps (libreoffice, firefox quantum, vlc, gimp etc) so you don't need to compile or configure anything just to try it out.

It is also available for download via PINN, should you prefer that route (named "Gentoo64" there).

For more details (and a screenshot!) see e.g. this thread (also on this thread, near the end, are some posts from people who've tried it).

This morning I managed to boot a Fedora-Minimal-28-1.1 aarch64 image on a Raspberry Pi 3B+.
It's not plain vanilla:
- when starting up it gets stuck in an endless ethernet error loop ( Rx : failed to receive: -5). That's a reported bug.
- it seems to detect too many USB devices/disks.
- HOWEVER : when I removed all USB devices and without ethernet cable, wait for timeout of the la78xx message and then:
- lo and behold : it boots !
- now you can plug in the keyboard and the ethernet cable again and define initial user/language settings
- unfortunately every reboot I need to remove the ethernet cable and the keyboard again until I get the user login prompt.
(thank you Fedora if you can get rid of this annoying -- but reported -- bug).
- afterwards I was able to update the system with 'dnf update'
- Minimal is very minimal indeed, but installing gcc gfortran ipconfig tar wget git, ... went fine.
- In preparation of running an HPL Linpack test with an aarch64 system, compilation of OpenBLAS went fine : all gcc 8 compiler flags were automatically set to armv8 and mtune to cortex-A53 or A57, and passed without an issue.
- unfortunately, compilation of MPICH (version 3.2.1) didn't work as well : it decided that the gcc compiler didn't work (very strange).
- Fedora 28 seems to have HPL Linpack packaged (compiled for mpich or openmpi) and also mpich-3.2.5. They installed well, but I wasn't able to get that Linpack version to work (you get an xhpl_mpich executable and an HPL.dat file somewhere but it gives errors when starting mpiexec).

So yes, 64 bit OS for 3B+ is coming and looks promising but isn't fully there yet

Tom.

Might as well add xubuntu to the list of 64 bit 3B+ compatible OSs. See https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/aarch64 ... b-3b/16853

Which "matter" ?

Creating a 64 bit Raspbian is not on the cards. Or if it is we probably won't hear about it until it arrives.

Many other options have been presented here to try out.
