Hauppauge PVR-USB2 MPEG-2 Capture.

Tue Oct 23, 2012 5:06 pm

Has anyone had any success with the above?

It is seen by the system and I can set and check configuration, but when I try to read data, the program locks up.

I'm accessing it with the V4L2 API and as I'm trying to learn that and Linux at the same time, it's extremely likely that it's something I'm not doing right. If anyone has got it to work with some standard software, that would be a good pointer.

I don't have the device in question, however try using guvcview to view it.

I am getting the same problem. I can configure the PVR via V4l without an
error and I can open it without error but when I try to read data from it I get
Input/Output errors. The same code on a PC Linux system works flawlessly.

Well I fixed my problem with my HVR-1900 , I didn't have
all the firmware files installed. Note to self always read the
dmesg output very carefully!

So does that mean you can watch analog tv on your Pi with the HVR-1900? (I'm interested in doing this and am wondering how well that works before I buy one.)

I am afraid I don't know, I have only tried using it for video capture.
All the driver support is there in the Kernel so it should be possible
to use the tuner for broadcast reception.

Can you please give us some insight of how well is the video capture working? Is it better than an EasyCap adapter?

Yes because the Hauppauge does hardware MPEG2 compression so there is considerably less activity on the USB interface.
