Convince Me To Buy a Raspberry Pi 3

Wed Oct 25, 2017 10:36 pm

I have a Pi 2 currently, and I love it. It has been used for a lot of things, ranging from a simple timelapse camera, being strapped on a bike as an action camera, or compiling source code. I use it every day, mostly for web browsing. I am mostly satisfied with the Pi 2, I just wish it was a little faster.

The Pi 3 seems like quite the upgrade from the 2. It has a 1.2GHz processor, faster RAM, Bluetooth and WiFi on board.

I already have all the stuff I would need to use it, e.g., another micro SD card, power supply, etc.

Convince me to buy it! :D
I have posted mostly with a Pi 2 running either Ubuntu MATE, or Raspbian.

There you go. Convinced? ;)

I won't try to convince to to buy a Pi3B. Unless you're trying to use the Pi as a simple desktop system or you want the built-in WiFi, your Pi2B will do just fine. On the other hand, if your Pi2B is struggling to do what you want it to, then a Pi3B would be the appropriate upgrade. On the gripping hand, if you accept Dr. Upton's statement made in an interview as part of the Pi3B launch, there is a possibility that in a bit less than 6 months there might be a Pi4B...and at the very least one might expect that to have less of an overheating problem under heavy load.

How about buying a Pi0W instead?

Its smaller, uses less power, requires less Amps, doesn't get (quite) as hot as a Pi3B, also has built-in wifi and Blutooth 4.0 (which, unlike the Pi3B, appears to work properly) and most importantly, its only $10USD

The downside is the GPIO header is unpopulated, there's no power protection circuitry, there is only a single USB OTG port, the camera connection is different (possibly the display port connection too), it has mini HDMI instead of full HDMI and there's only 512MB of RAM. It also doesn't support hardware accelleration

Neither Pi0 nor Pi0W has a DSI connector. I have some Pi0s that are old enough that they don't have a CSI connector, either.

The display port is completely different because it doesn't exist on the Pi Zero (W)

Eh? The Pi Zero range has exactly the same hardware acceleration as every other Pi to date. The main parts of the SoC are identical especially all the video processing blocks, it's just the ARM CPU cores, the initial boot ROM, the memory interface type and a couple of hardware bug fixes that are different in the BCM2837 used in the Pi 3B and newer Pi 2B.

In addition to the built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, the Pi3 is significantly faster than the Pi2, so it will do everything you are doing now, only better!

Ande besides, who doesn't want more Pi?

Take it upon yourself to buy a Pi3 and a PiZW.
You are helping fund education and computing to people. Do your bit for charity.

Sit there and compare the benefits and drawbacks of each so you can tell others.

All for about £45. Bargain.

The second generation RPi 2B has the same BCM2837 SoC as the RPi 3B, but is underclocked:

@fruity

You mean the 2B+ version 1.2

Eh? You're confusing things... Europe <> EU
Apart from that: the UK is still part of the EU

GB is, and always was, geographically part of Europe. As much as us Brits like to think otherwise.

The European Community is a political thing. The United Kingdom of Great Britain is still a member of that.

Mind you, I have never understood why Europe as a continent is different from Asia. To which it is attached.

That would explain why I couldn't remember - it doesn't exist.

About the hardware acelleration though, it may have the same hardware but if I enable the experimental video driver via raspi-config, all I get is a white screen and I must edit configmtxt on my Pi3b to put it back, and then it works again.

"Experimental" is possibly the key word here. Also the smaller amount of memory may be relevant.

That's not a way to convince anyone to buy a Pi3 ;-)

I had thought about that awhile back, and now it is starting to seem like a good idea. I stick my pi in a lot of wierd places,, and it would be nice to have a smaller platform. I could then continue to live with my pi 2 as my main system, but use the pi 0 as my on-the-front-lines pi.
Hmmmmm.. :D

I asked that question because I was almost 100% positive I was going to buy a pi 3. I had read about the pi 3 having overheating issues, so I was just going to buy a fan to slap on the top. There was a lot of really helpful feedback in that thread.
I ended up using the money on something else instead, so I never got a pi 3.

Yes, but for some reason they seem to be more expensive than the Pi3, so you might as well get a Pi3.
