Where to buy Zero W in USA?

Sat May 20, 2017 3:05 am

Hi all just trying to build a pi zero W into an auto backup for my Son's camera/SD card. I just can't find a bare Zero without cases and accessories I don't want. Any sources? Does Amazon ever have them? I can get to Atlanta from time to time and I hear they can be found in computer stores there.

Thanks!
Rick :D

The two Microcenters in the Atlanta area have them. A day or so before you go there you should probably reserve 1 for in-store pickup so you know that there will be on waiting for you.

Thanks! I usually stay near one of the micro centers. Hopefully I can get there soon.

FWIW, ordering from the UK vendors is about as fast and cheap as anywhere (aside from MicroCenter, if they happen to have built a store near you). I've had good luck with Pimoroni and ThePiHut, who shipped Pi Zero W's to California, delivered in about a week, for £13.50 ($17.41) and £14.60 ($18.83) respectively. Adafruit isn't much faster (I love them dearly, but shipping speed isn't one of their strong points).

Also, a very nice near-real-time inventory tracker for the Zero and Zero W can be found here: ThePiLocator.

The only way you'll find them on Amazon is if somebody buys a bunch at MicroCenter and resells them (usually for substantially higher prices).

Yes, at prices from $26 to $40, once shipping is factored in (the most amusing being "$10" plus $17 shipping). As stated above, the ones on Amazon are almost entirely from people buying them at retail, in person, from MicroCenter stores, and then reselling on Amazon. If you really need one in a big hurry, and select one of the ones shipping via Amazon Prime that might make some sense (and the ones via Prime are currently going for $30, $35, and $40 - and the $30 one is backordered, so you're looking at $35 to get it quickly from Amazon - the OP was looking to avoid the extra cost associated with prepackaged kits, and, heck, you can buy Pi 3B's from Amazon, via Prime, for $37 any day). Otherwise you're better off buying from one of the actual authorized dealers.

OP did specify "in the US". CanaKit is Canadian...and has higher shipping charges that Adafruit, Pimoroni and Pi Hut (despite shorter distances being involved).

ho shipped Pi Zero W's to California, delivered in about a week, for £13.50 ($17.41) and £14.60 ($18.83) respectively.
Is that the shipping costs on top of the $10 for the Pi or the total cost?

Adafruit.com; That's where I get MOST of my electronic "stuff". $9.00 shipping but it's rather fast. About 5 days, last shipment was only 3 days!

That is the cost of the Pi plus the cost of shipping: the total cost from the bottom line of those two orders. The Pi Zero W is not exactly 10 USD when you're buying it in GBP (and the Zero is not exactly 5 USD, either). The two orders in question looked like this:

Pimoroni: £8.00 Pi Zero W + £5.50 shipping = £13.50
ThePiHut: £9.60 Pi Zero W + £5.00 shipping = £14.60

The prices and shipping costs may have changed slightly since then, I can't say. And of course the GBP/USD exchange rate will have fluctuated slightly. I'm not posting this to compare/contrast those two shops (as I said, I've had good experiences with both), just to show that getting a Zero W to the far corner of the US by buying direct from the UK is not unreasonable.

Oh, I thought it was a US company with warehouses in Canada. When I went to buy mine it calculated everything in US$ until I put in my address - and then all the numbers went up 30% :o !

Very reasonable prices - obviously you get benefit of no VAT :)
We get charged £2-50 (+20% VAT) shipping so your £5 shipping is a bargain :)

Indeed. I suspect the difference in base price between the two (8 vs. 9.60 GBP) was that I could opt out of the 20% VAT on one while the other didn't provide that option - I know I've run into that situation somewhere (didn't really hurt my feelings much to fund the UK government to the tune of 1.60 GBP). I have found both companies (along with ModMyPi and Adafruit) quite agreeable to deal with.
