It looks like somebody is already removing the crap. I hope, it did not contain any kind of exploits.

No, all these new accounts posted some kind of first (moderated) post, which did not look suspicious.

They appear to have copied someone else's question as their first post, which gets them approved.

The moderators could do more.

On the forum I moderate
  • I check originating IP address (India, Pakistan, Russia and China among others are good sources of spam).
  • If it includes any link I'll take a look at that to see what's being offered (and whether it's relevant).
  • If the poster's signature includes a link, that's another marker.
  • I'll search Google to see if the post is a clone of an old one.
  • If the post is bumping an old thread it gets more attention.
  • If in doubt I'll reject it at first post moderation (the poster can always try again).
That forum which isn't anywhere near as big as this gets upwards of 200 spam posts per day. It's a non-trivial task getting rid of that junk.

So, I've got a Greasemonkey/Tampermonkey script that rejects posts based on common spam words in subject lines. Any moderator who wants that can send me a private message and I'll give them a link (it contains some very unsavoury NSFW words in that user.js javascript program).
Note: Having anything humorous in your signature is completely banned on this forum. Wear a tin-foil hat and you'll get a ban.

I would guess it's not really that much trouble once set up to do it. I don't think it's purely about getting their spam on here but getting it cached by search engines where their 'promotion' and links can have longer persistence and are more likely to be found by a wider audience.

I don't know what the metric is for how much spammers get paid or what they have to achieve to get paid but that's the only thing they will really care about. How effective any spam campaign is will not likely be their concern.

'Mass spam' is usually easily noticed when it arrives and, if it comes from just one or two spammers, quickly disappears as those accounts are nuked. It is usually just a short lived inconvenience.

Once the bot software is written, there really isn't anything for people to be involved in- the thing works by itself without human involvement it's all automatic so it's no trouble at all.

So why does so much spam get through? Not today's bot generated junk but things like the spam I reported on viewtopic.php?f=63&t=183447 (which is now eviscerated).

Can't you folks click a link (to open in an incognito window) to see if it mentions Raspberry Pi out there, that ain't difficult.

BTW, I know you're doing a good job which ain't easy (I'm just being a bugger), because forum moderation often results in Godwin's Law being invoked [I've had that].

As a percentage, hardly any spam gets through....

I just approved three posts and disapproved about 20.
