Pi 3 with LCD screen

Sat Mar 11, 2017 10:36 pm

Just picked up a Pi 3 with a screen. Trying to hook up an external monitor via HDMI.
The screen works on the Pi but on the external monitor I only get the "Welcome to PIXEL" screen.

Can't get the desktop from the Pi screen to the external monitor.
I tried removing the screen from the Pi and re powering but same results.

I'm sure this is a code issue.

Can someone help me out here please.

Thanks in advance
Scott

Are you trying to get both screens working at the same time?

If not and you just want the Pixel desktop environment on the HDMI screen while the DSI screen is still attached to the Pi, have you tried ignore_lcd=1 in config.txt?

How is the LCD screen connected? If its connected via GPIO that Pi my may be running a custom kernel modified for that screen.

Yes via GPIO

Ah, in that case, my advice probably will not work for you. I have no idea what a solution might be, but perhaps you could tell us which screen you are using.

I can't see everything on the Pi display and I can't scroll to the bottom to hit a save key, if there is one. I'm just not seeing the whole screen. I just want to get it to my monitor via the HDMI.

I thought I could just remove the display and reboot to the monitor but no luck.

Easy way out, IMHO, reimage your SD card with the latest Raspbian. HDMI will work by default then. The GPIO screen won't though. Or have a look at the config.txt file to see what was changed to make the GPIO screen work. That could be hard to cypher out though. I'm not sure I would know what to look for. One thing I can tell you is any line with a # in front of it is ignored and treated as just a comment. Lines with no # are acted on.

It sounds like the GPIO screen is set to the wrong resolution.

I just released what your issue is. That will happen on really small screens. If you mouse up to the title bar of the open window and right click, there will be a move option. Click that and you can then drag the open window up so you can get to the save button. Happens to me even with the Pi Foundation 7 inch screen.

Unfortunately, even with the right resolution, many Linux GUI applications and themes weren't designed for small screens and will be partially hidden from view no matter what on smaller screens. In some cases you can right click on the top or sides of a window and select the "Move" option to move the bottom of a window up into view with either a mouse or arrow keys (the top of the window will become hidden) to access controls/buttons at the bottom of a window. There might be a keyboard shortcut to activate the "Move" mode as well, but I don't know what it might be.

Edit: yeah, what alphanumeric said^.

Yeah, it had me scratching my head the first time I came across it. Trying to move the taskbar to the bottom of the screen seemed impossible, lol. On my 32 inch 1080p TV no problem. On my Pi foundation screen not so much. I can only imagine what its like on one of those PiTFT screens that are around 3 inches.

Modifying the Pixel DE and some common accompanying applications to work better on small screens could make it a lot more valuable IMO. It'd also be nice if pi-greeter wasn't missing basic things like on-screen keyboard support and X-session selection.

I don't have a Pi desktop handy but you could try holding 'Left Alt' and click on any part of the window with the 'Left Mouse' to move it around. It works in Xfce but, as I said, I don't have a Pi desktop handy.
