More likely to work with USB to serial adapters. I suspect it will be horribly slow. It might be an interesting project if you like Win98, but a re-write of the code would probably be more effective.
Is the original program still supported? Is the supplier still around? What is supplied now to operate a new equivalent system? Do you have (or can you get) source code? If so porting it to a Pi is a definite possibility. The supplier might even be interested in buying back a ported program (but be careful with permissions if it is not open source).
