That was exactly my point above. One may not like an honours system for whatever reason. But often it's not just the individual that is getting recognition and public awareness but the cause that they represent.

In this case millions of people will be asking "Eben who?", then finding out about the Pi and the Foundation. Some will get curious and get themselves Pi. And with that more people are exposed to the possibilities of technology and encouraged to pursue it.

It's great.

Full details of the thousand-plus awarded birthday honours -

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... t_2016.pdf
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... e_list.pdf
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... g_list.pdf

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... d_list.pdf
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... s_list.pdf

I imagine most will remain unknowns except to the people who already know of them unless the award is one of the higher honours, there is wider mention, or the person is already a known celebrity or artist.

Great news. Well deserved.

Now...will it be Dame Liz Upton, or Lady Upton?

Doesn't look like it. She would only be able to do that (within the Order given) if Eben had been made either a Knight Commander or a Knight Grand Cross. I.e. At least one rank higher than he has received. Still...it does put him on the British Order of Precedence...along with in excess 100K other people.

But she is every inch a lady in her own right.

Perhaps, now, Eben - sorry, Cdr E. C. Upton - could upload an avatar to the forum, maybe a picture of his medal.
His posts up to now have been curiously anonymous in that respect.

Oh, and, yes, congrats.

In terms of precedence it's pretty low down -

The Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II.
The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
The Prince of Wales.
Archbishop of Canterbury.
Lord High Chancellor.
Archbishop of York.
The Prime Minister.
Ambassadors and High Commissioners.
Dukes.
Ministers and Envoys.
Eldest sons of Dukes of Blood Royal.
Marquesses.
Dukes' eldest sons
Earls.
Marquesses' eldest sons.
Viscounts.
Earls' eldest sons.
Bishops of London, Durham and Winchester.
Other English Bishops.
Secretaries of State, if of the degree of Baron.
Barons.
Viscounts' eldest sons.
Knights of the Garter.
Privy Counsellors.
Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Lord Chief Justice of England.
Master of the Roll.
Lords Justices of Appeal.
Judges of the High Court.
Sons of Life Peers.
Baronets.
Knights of the Thistle.
Members of the Order of Merit.
Knights Grand.
Knights Commanders.
Knights Bachelor.
Official Referees of the Supreme Court.
Circuit Judges.
Commanders of the British Empire.
Officers of the British Empire.
Baronet's eldest sons.
Members of the British Empire.
Navel, Military, Air and other Esquires by office.

Don't get me wrong; I am all in favour of recognizing service and contribution, just not the way we do it with our Honours system.

Eben deserve recognition but, he's not the only one; all those who made the Pi what it is deserve credit for their part in that. I am sure they are all proud of their achievements, and may be happy with that, but it seems a poor show to me that the best Liz gets is "wife of CBE" and the rest "friend of CBE".

No matter how well Eben or anyone else does, they will never reach the dizzying heights of those granted their title simply by virtue of their birth. I can't throw out my opposition to the elitist and class-based Honours system we have just because a few people I think deserve recognition get that.

Living up to your name there Hippy!

I'm a Royalist, and my annoying younger brother has an OBE! I cannot compete with that or Eben's CBE, so I'll just continue on being me.

Congratulations indeed.
