Latest Version of Firefox and Thunderbird on a Raspberry Pi [obsolete]

Sun Jun 05, 2016 12:55 am

This is a way to get the latest version of Firefox and Thunderbird on your Raspberry Pi. THIS ONLY WORKS ON A RASPBERRY PI 2 OR 3 OR 3B+!
EDIT: This doesn't work right now, I'm trying to find out why.
EDIT: I found out why it doesn't work. There is an unfixed bug in recent versions of Firefox for armhf, to use this you will have to switch to a 64-bit kernel by using something like this.

1. Install dirmngr:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install dirmngr
2. Add the repository to your sources:

Code: Select all

echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa/ubuntu trusty main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/firefox.list
echo "deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa/ubuntu trusty main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/firefox-source.list
echo "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/thunderbird-next/ubuntu trusty main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/thunderbird.list
echo "deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/thunderbird-next/ubuntu trusty main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/thunderbird-source.list
3. Install Firefox and Thunderbird:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys A6DCF7707EBC211F
sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-keys 9BDB3D89CE49EC21
sudo apt update && sudo apt install firefox thunderbird -y
Firefox and Thunderbird should be installed!

I think that you could just install the firefox file but the others add some extra features so if you want to save up on space you can just install the firefox file.

This installs Firefox 47(beta) but if you want the latest stable version you can go here(Thunderbird is here) and click on where it says firefox 46.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.3 in armhf (Updates). You can replace "46"with the latest version when you read this. Once you click on that it should say
armhf build of firefox 46.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.3 in ubuntu trusty RELEASE produced these files:

firefox_46.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.3_armhf.deb (36.9 MiB)
Click on where it says firefox_46.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.3_armhf.deb (36.9 MiB) and then do:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i firefox_*.deb
and the latest stable version of Firefox should be installed!

As of 9th of June, 2016 the package Firefox-ESR replaces Iceweasel, and is in Wheezy and Jessie security repositories.

I think that's 45 and the latest version is 46 or 47, but that's useful.

Debian by default have always used the ESR branch which has differing version numbering:

Therefore ESR 45.2 was released same week as standard release 47 !!

ESR means Extended Support Release, much like LTS in Ubuntu/Mint versioning.

I can see why this is useful, from just this comment over at Mozilla : "Version 38.8.0, first offered to ESR channel users on April 26, 2016"; they do go thru versions like popcorn.

There are apparently added vulnerabilities for some (windows?) users, none yet reported here for the current ESR version, as of now 45.2
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/ ... refox-esr/
-----------------------
I'm wondering about the Firefox offer (during installation) to keep bookmarks & passwords in their cloud, which could be really handy for people working with multiple machines. And yet, from a security point of view, those are the keys to the kingdom, including an interesting profile of the owner... any thoughts on that?

I think you're right, and I also think it uses the mobile version of web pages which makes it faster but I like the desktop version of Google more.

Debian have always erred on the side of caution, hence why ESR is offered, so it is a wait until features of the Standard Release are available :D

Finally, I install the lastest stable Firefox ESR with this command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install firefox-esr-l10n-es-es
Change es-es for your own language and country.

Hello All

I am using a PI2 - I already had Iceweasel Installed under Wheezy.

All I did was to enter <apt-get install iceweasel> in the terminal, and it updated me to FireFox v45.2.0

All my settings including shortcuts and open tabs were carried forward.

Sounds a bit too easy I know - But it just did.

Best

That's Firefox ESR. It's pretty much the same as Iceweasel except has Firefox branding. This has the normal version of Firefox and still keeps all your settings, and I've found I like Firefox more than Firefox ESR.

Hello,

whats described here does not work proper for me and producing a problem:

I do not know why, but if I install the latest firefox version as described here,

firefox_50.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1_armhf.deb
firefox-globalmenu_50.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1_armhf.deb
firefox-locale-de_50.0.2+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.1_armhf.deb

from above (Ubuntu Moz security team)

, on a mint and fresh installed latest Raspbian, some webpages (from Jimdo for example!) crash the browser.

Purged it, installed the ESR-Version from repos and the same webpages load fine.

There definately must be some problem....I opened about:crashes after that happened (its reproduceable, try to open this for example), but I dont know what all these logs want to tell me...some files are marked red (libc, libxul...?) - it seems to me there are problems with some dependencies if I install the latest firefox.

Any ideas? Esr does not seem to have e10s, which I want to play around with...(but for the test here I used it mint without any change in its config)

Any ideas how to fix that?

Does the link work for you with a non-ESR-Firefox?

But is there really some important difference between the fast changing version and the ESR? People in this thread say stuff like "I prefer the normal one better". I have no problem with that but am kind of curious about why/what specifically has changed that people feel is so essentially better. The changelogs have the details but the changes often appear to be quite small things so that the versions differ very little. I suspect that people are just suffering from a "bigger number is better" kind of attitude. Also ESR is going to jump to the next version next spring some time...

The latest version of Firefox has built-in support for watching Netflix on Linux. Since many of us use our Raspberry Pis as HTPCs or stream boxes, this is something seriously worth upgrading for.

That would really be something. But does it work on ARM? Does it work on v6 or only on the later ones?

I tried searching for info on this. But the results were inconclusive. Obviously the answer to the ARM version is tha since you cannot find a armv6 ubuntu repo at all (so no firefox), it will not be possible. But what about the question whether or not the firefox widewine works on arm at all? All I managed to find were some mentions/complaints that it works on x86 64 bit only. I wonder if some one can confirm?

ok. thanks. except that there are a whole lot of news/tutorial sites posting about how it works on linux. my questions was however, that does this only apply to 64 bit x86 machines or does the widewinde CDM plugin really also work on arm and Raspbery pi.

The normal version, non-ESR, has e10s
I'll try the q4os-one later...

If its useful and the Pi benefits from it? I dont know, thats what I want to find out.
